Kenneth Dressler Obituary

DRESSLER Kenneth Dressler, MD, age 52, of Harrison, New York, passed away on Saturday, July 28 at St. Vincent's Medical Center, a place he loved, following a courageous battle with cancer. His family was a source of constant support throughout his illness. A well known and highly respected physician in the area, Dr. Dressler was on active staff at St. Vincent's Medical Center, where he served as Chief of Hematology/Oncology since 2007. Dr. Dressler was a member of the private practice Medical Specialists of Fairfield since 1998. As Clinical Trials Coordinator at St. Vincent's, he was responsible for bringing research trials to the community, offering novel agents and treatment strategies to patients with cancer. Dr. Dressler was also committed to teaching medical residents the complexities of cutting edge cancer care, and stressed the importance of clear communication between physicians and their patients. He was instrumental in bringing the multi-disciplinary approach to cancer care to St. Vincent's. Named 2012 Physician of the Year at St. Vincent's, with a record-breaking 19 nominations from fellow physicians, nurses, staff members and patients, the popular oncologist played a huge role in the remarkable progress of cancer care at St. Vincent's and in saving countless lives in the community since his arrival 16 years ago. Known for his extraordinary clinical skills, intellect, knowledge, wit, guitar and hockey-playing, Dr. Dressler was well-loved by his patients and colleagues, but will also be remembered for his friendly verbal sparring with fellow physicians. But more important, he will be remembered by all for his courage, honesty and solidarity in the face of his final illness, and for possessing the qualities essential in a physician: a hard, skillful work ethic, intellectual integrity and compassion. Dr. Dressler graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in chemistry with a bachelor's degree from Brandeis University. He then went on to receive his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1985. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, a Fellowship in Medicine at Cornell University Medical College, and a Fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Dressler won numerous awards in his field including the Charles A. Dana Research Fellow Award, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Clinical Scholars Award, and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences Fellowship Award. He held many clinical and academic posts at institutions including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Yale University Department of Medical Oncology, and the Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons. He also performed clinical research and published in his field. He was board certified by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was a member of the American Societies of Hematology, and Clinical Oncology. Dr. Dressler also served as the internal medicine physician for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers hockey team, and was an avid hockey player himself. Dr. Dressler is survived by his wife Nancy, son Andrew, daughters Danielle and Jillian, and beloved dog Max. Funeral services were held on Monday at Congregation Emanu El of Westchester, 2125 Westchester Avenue, East Rye, New York. Donations in Dr. Dressler's honor may be made to St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound, 2800 Main Street, Bridgeport, CT 06606.

Dr. Dressler will remain with me forever. He saved my life from cancer and saved my wife's life numerous times from Sickle cell. He is the true meaning of what a doctor really is. He fought for his patients, regardless of his peers. When he saw other people in the field slack off of being indifferent, he gave them a quick slap in the butt to remind them what medicine is supposed to do. We were proud to have him as our doctor. No one has replaced him since. We love you.

Dr. Dressler saved my father“s life. My father often said over the years he wished he could have talked to him one more time. I can never express how much we love him and miss him nor how much we owe to him.

I still miss Ken with all my heart. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. I had the honor of working with him and, by far, he was the best doctor and oncologist I ever had the privilege of knowing.

To the Dressler Family -- Dr. Dressler was my oncologist in 2006 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. He was a wonderful, caring, brilliant man who played a huge role in saving my life. My cancer has recently metastasized, and I think of him every day...wishing he were here to see me through...I am an avid reader and I will never forget how he used to come in to the chemo room and we'd talk about the books I was reading. May God bless your family and may he give my friend lasting peace. Thank you for sharing your loved one with me.

As a cousin of Kenny's, I am deeply saddened. I had not seen him for over a decade, since his father's funeral in Montreal in December of 2001, when I briefly met his three amazing, beautiful children. I knew Kenny as a teenager and a young adult, followed his brilliant accomplishments during his early years as a physician, and was present at his wedding. Having been close to his kind and sensitive grandparents, Lorenz and Tony, and to his wonderful father, Cary, I am not at all surprised that Kenny contributed so outstandingly to his profession and was so empathetic and giving to his patients. I discovered this very sad news through a search on the Web.

Dear Nancy -

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Ken's passing today. You can imagine the emotion I experienced when I tried to look up his office number today in order to "catch up" after several years and learned of his death. Kenny and I went to college and med school together and then we both went off to residencies in New York - so we truly came of age together. Kenny genuinely loved medicine and being a physician. He was also a caring man and good friend. His loss is immense.

Elana and I wish you our deepest condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

A great loss for the medical community, as well as the general community at large.

My family is saddened to learn of the passing of a phenomenal physician, Dr. Kenneth Dressler. He had been my personal physician (internal medicine) for 11 years. Additionally, Dr. Dressler was my late wife's (Beatrice Carr Bass) oncologist, and he was a beacon of hope and help during her tragic illness. When I remarried, he served as the internist for my wife, Belinda McClendon Bass, and as a caring oncologist for her mother during the year prior to her passing. We remember Dr. Dressler with love and fondness. May God rest his soul.

Dear Dressler Family,
Something made me google 'Ken Dressler here' tonight. I was speaking of my brother who was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma at 27. We met Dr. Dressler at MSK. My brother did not fit any of the trials and MSK could not help him. BUT...big BUT Dr Dressler sent him to Dr. Pecora at HMC and that gave my brother another 8 years.
We have always remembered what a brilliant caring doctor he was during the short time we knew him many years ago. God Bless Dr. Dressler and his family.

I unfortunately just found out my friend had passed months ago. He was certainly a very great man. I had the pleasure of working with him from my role with a pharmaceutical company. I remember talking with him about sports injuries etc. Some great dissection of clinical articles- he was the smartest guy in the room. So so saddened to find out hes gone. God Bless you buddy.

Dear Nancy, Andrew, Danielle, and Jillian,
I just learned of Ken's passing today. What a shock. I first met Ken or "Dressler" as I used to call him, in sixth grade in Montreal and he became one of my closest friends all through middle school and high school. We had lots of adventures together first on our bicycles and then driving around in the "Yellow Submarine," the yellow VW Bug he got when he turned 16. I was not surprised to read all of the testimonials from patients and co-workers at St. Vincents. Medicine was his calling because it allowed him to channel his keen intellect, passion, and discipline in the service of others. What a tragic loss. My heartfelt condolences to all of you.

I heard of Dr Dressler's death this morning upon a visit to St Vincent's Immediate Care. He was my primary care doctor for about 5 years. I am in shock. He was an excellent physician and he always made me feel better whenever I had any concerns about my health. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will be missed.

I learned today of Dr. Dressler's passing and I am in shock. I was his first primary care patient back in 1996 and although thankfully I did not have to see him professionally that often, I always thought of him as a wonderful doctor. He always took whatever time seemed necessary so that I never left feeling forced out the door. We talked often about our families and our jobs as well as our health. I will miss him greatly. I wish his family strength during this very difficult time.

Today, I learned about Dr.Dressler's passing. My family met Dr.Dressler when my Dad was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. He became my Dad's medical team leader. He led us with honesty and kindness. We were truly blessed to meet him and work, side by side, with him and his wonderful staff, for two years. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

September 28, 2012

Dear Nancy, Andrew, Danielle, and Jillian,
I think of you all often and from reading these posts know that so many of us, his patients and friends, miss him so. I cannot imagine how much you all miss Ken and hope that you are comforted by the wonderful memories that you have. The pride and joy that he expressed to so many regarding his wonderful family was present in his life always, and as a patient I felt like I knew you all because of his incredible love for you. It is obvious as I read these posts that there are hundreds or thousands of us, his patients, who felt the same way. He made each of us feel that our health was a priority and at the same time, shared his health challenges and his many blessings (his family) with all of us. Please know that as I walk the halls of St. Vincent's I think of him often and his spirit lives on. I will always be grateful for the care he gave me in my darkest days, and am sad for all the patients that could benefit from his unique personal care. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

It is so humbling to read about all of the incredible things Ken did for so many people. I only knew "Doc" as someone who always battled hard while playing hockey. He often played against guys half his age - and he always rose to the challenge. Little did I know what a great man he was, as he sat quietly unlacing his skates, after giving it all on the ice. It was a real honor to have played hockey with "Doc."

Dr. Dressler was such a special man. We met him after my husband was diagnosed with lymphoma. He saved my husband's life. Not only was he an amazing doctor with an incredible bedside manner, he was a compassionate and wonderful man. He had a great sense of humor and would make us laugh during my husband's appointments and we will never forget him. The world is a better place because he was in it. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

To Dr. Ken Dressler's Family,
I had the honor of seeing Ken as my doctor for 15+ years and I am just devastated. Though, I met him in the psych ward at St. Vincent's, he never held it against me, and took me under his wing when other doctors would have left me in the dust! THe day I met him I said to everyone: That's my new doctor, handsome, sharp, and so loving and caring.

Dear Nancy:
I was on the Internet and just learned of Ken's passing. Please accept my most heartfelt sympathies. Ken and I worked very long hours together in our lab in NYC for 3 years. I've missed his intelligence, humor and friendship since our careers had taken us to different places. The world has lost a truly wonderful man. I was blessed to have known Ken. May God bless you and your family.

Sincerely,

I am still not able to come to terms with Ken Dressler's passing. He was my teacher and later colleague and has taken care of me as a physician covering for my doctor. I took his presence for granted. I have learnt a lot from him and will always be grateful that he touched my life. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Kenny was my cousin. I have tons of awesome memories with him. Kenny has directly and indirectly (Through my dad) influenced my life so much, like the music I listen to, the sports I like and my guitar playing. Kenny will be greatly missed and will never be forgotten. We love you Kenny.

I was saddened to hear about Dr Kenneth Dressler's passing. To me he will always be immortalized as "kenny" whom I knew and grew up with in Montreal. I have many fond memories of riding around in his VW without a heater, watching him on the old TV show-"Reach for the Top" and in later years having interesting conversations and verbal sparring. Kenny was not only a lot of fun, but kind, generous and of course brilliant. I have many old photos which I'd be happ to share with his family. My symapthies, may he rest in peace.

My brother Crayne and I offer our deepest sympathies to Nancy and all Kenny's family.
Kenny was a great friend to me. We hung out a lot in our teens and into his University years. He was warm, funny and brilliant and honest, sometimes painfully honest. He never held back. I remember early in my architecture career Kenny insisting I think bigger and push myself harder as a matter of fact. I took his advice to heart coming from him as it did and it has served me well over the years.
Early on Kenny knew he would be the doctor he became and so happy he found the family love he would have wished for.
We will miss him. Please call me if you ever want to hear more stories or if there is anything I could do.

Dr. Dressler was the one of the best teachers I have ever met. He thought me a lot during my residency years at St. Vincent's Medical Center. I admired his intelligence, compassion for his patients and down to earth nature. St. Vincent's residents have lost one of the greatest attendings who was always kind enough to spare time from his busy schedule to teach new doctors. I will never forget him. Sincere condolences to Dressler family.

To Nancy and the kids: Once again I want to let you know you continue to occupy my thoughts and my prayers. I mistakingly thought the pain of losing Ken would subside by now but it has not; if anything, it has only grown deeper... I can only imagine how all of you, his pride and joy, must be hurting! As an Oncology RN, I am grateful for having worked side by side with Ken when he begun his brilliant practice here in Connecticut. I wrote to you as soon as I found out that my beloved friend Kenny had passed away, but felt compelled to write to you again. His bright light will never stop shining, his great sense of humor will never diminish, but it is his heart, his loving heart that will never stop caring for those of us lucky enough to have had him in our lifes here on Earth, and look forward to seeing him again when we all meet up in Heaven. God Bless You All... Terri Ciccarini

To the Dressler Family: My deepest & sincere sympathy to all of you on your loss. Dr. Dressler was my Doctor for the last 15 years and then became my family's doctor also. He was one of the most kind, caring, genuine, & intelligant people I have ever met. He went above and beyond the call of duty with all of his patients... always lending an ear and taking the time explaining in detail what you did not understand so that you can leave his office with peace of mind. Truely the greatest Doctor ever. He spoke often and very highly of his wife and children. He will be deeply missed by my family & I and the entire community. May peace and comfort be with all of you. Rest in peace Dr. Dressler & we will never forget you. Maria E. Videira & Family

Dressler family:
I knew Kenny for many years in Montreal and through our 3 years together at Brandeis. He and I shared many rides back and forth to Montreal in his VW Bug, singing, laughing and planning our futures. I had lost touch with him after medical school but was not surprised to read about all his accomplishments and success. Having just lost another classmate over the weekend, the loss of Kenny seems doubly unfair. My condolences to all of you.

Dr.Dressler was my doctor for 10 yrs. Truely the greatest doctor I ever had. Dr. Dressler saved my life. When I was told over the phone by a surgent I had breast cancer I was so upset. The surgent called Dr. Dressler. He was already there for me as my MD. He knew how upset I was and took the time out to have me come to his office. I found comfort there and he told me I was going to be alright. Dr. Dressler was a man of his word and I am so thankful for all his knowledge and the support I was given as his patient. All I know is God must of needed another angel and DR. KENNETH DRESSLER was the one he called on. God knew Ken earned his wings while he was here with us on earth. He helped so many people in need. Dr. Dressler was a strong man. I had the chance to thank him for saving my life. I work at St. Vincents hospital as a cna and Dr. Dressler was my patient several evenings. He was a strong man and always kept the faith. I really enjoyed when I heard him singing in his room "SHE's got a ticket to ride" He showed me that when things are not going so well there is always someway to pick yourself up and make yourself feel better. To Dr. Dressler's family, I will pray that everyone finds the peace and comfort they need in the day's to come.

Dr. Dressler was one of my heroes. He was my doctor when I was diagnosed with breast cancer and when another oncologist told me if I didn't follow his treatment I wouldn't live to see grandchildren. Hearing those words I sought out another Doctor and found Dr. Dressler ... thank you Tracy. :D
Today, I am a 13 year survivor. I kept him as my primary care provider all these years and loved seeing the art work and pictures in his office and hearing about his children. It really hurts knowing that you have left us behind. If this is how his patients feel, I can only imagine the pain his family is in. It was wonderful reading all of these entires and I am sure his family has to feel good reading all of these wonderful remarks about their father and Nancy's husband. You will be forever missed Dr. Dressler; but never forgotten. Allison if you get to see this, please contact me. :)

To the family of Dr. Dressler, I can't believe he passed away. He was my wife's doctor when she was diagnosed with cancer and we are so thankful we found and chose him to be her doctor. Dear Dressler family, my deepest sympathy for your loss. I don't have to tell you what a great person Dr. Dressler was because you already know. In the 16 plus pages in this memorial book many spoke of his compassion, brilliance, sense of humor etc. He truly had a gift given to him by God. I hope you find comfort in knowing that he is with The Creator watching over all of you. I am reminded of the words of Hans Christian Anderson. I am heartbroken to learn of the loss of Kenny. I remember him most as having those great Knicks seats and I used to run into him at games in the 1990s. We were in touch once in awhile after. Nancy,

I had the extreme privilege to be a teammate of Ken's this past year on the ice. I could tell how much he loved the game of hockey, his life, and his family. He brought a spirit to the dressing room, and never wanted to miss a shift, even when he was weakened. We will miss him greatly on and off the ice.

To Nancy and the kids:

I had the honor of working alongide Ken for quite some time, but more than that, I had the priviledge of being a very close friend even when our paths no longer ran side by side... As an Oncology nurse, I can attest to the fact that, besides his brilliant mind as an Oncologist, Ken was a man of great integrity and a very big heart. To him, patients were always more important than profit, and I admired him tremendously for it, especially in view of the sad truth that for many other physicians I came to know along the way, that was not always the case. I am deeply sorry that I only found out about his passing five minutes ago, or I would have been next to my friend Ken for our final goodbye... I am crying as I write this, and will for a long time to come. Humbly, Terri Ciccarini RN

I met Dr. Dressler when he joined Medical Specialists. I immediately liked and admired him for his intellect and competency but mostly for the "heart" he clearly brought to the practice of Oncology. This was apparent immediately. Nancy, may you find peace in all the sweet memories you shared with Ken. Surely his name will remain in this world as a blessing.

I remember when my mom was diagnosed with cancer we were in the exam room and he made us feel so at ease and told mom your won't end up like your sister did you have a chance at beating it. Then as he was leavign I said I forgot to ask you about the mri and he made a funny joke something to the effect of no the mri was clear no one living in there. Point is we came in there so distraught and hopeless and Dr. Dressler made us feel at ease and even made mom laugh. When I heard what happened I was so saddened by it so is my mom...but take comfort in knowing he isn't on this earth suffering anymore he is Resting in peace. God bless you all.

My deepest sympathy to the Dressler family,

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Dressler for years and so enjoyed his truth, honesty and kindness he constantly displayed.
I admired the relationships he had with his patients and the quality he brought forward in giving them "brutal honesty", whether they wanted it or not.
We spent many a Saturday when he was covering when he would bring the children in tow on rounds, never wanting to miss a precious moment with them.
He knew the true meaning of life and "got it". Bless you, Dr. Ken Dressler, you will truly be missed!

My thoughts and prayers to the Dressler Family. I am truely honored to have been able to have taken care of him during the hardest time of his life. Regardless of his diagnosis, he kept his jokes coming for our smiles and kept us on our toes. I will always remember to put Oreos on the Shopping List for you Dr. Dressler! You will be missed and loved by many, and never forgotten! I am very blessed to have learned as much as I have from him!

To Dr. Dressler's family I would like to share a story with you that will describe this special man and his ultimate professionalism. Dr. Dressler treated my mother for pancreatic cancer in 1998. I'll never forget this man and how compassionate he was in our initial family conference describing to our family just what we were up against. Being the same age as him, I remember asking him back in 1998 if this dreadful disease will ever have a cure, and he expressed with both optimism and hope that it would happen during our lifetime. He almost had a certain charisma in his approach to treating my mother that gave her the strength to battle this disease. I will always remember calling Dr. Dressler to inform him the day of my mother's passing and his kind words were more comforting than anyone elses that day. He even went one step further to immediately write our family a letter complimenting my mother on how she dealt with her disease with such dignity and strength. He was the ultimate professional, but before that just an amazing person. To Mrs. Dressler and the entire Dressler family - God bless you all. I offer my condolences to you all and may Dr. Dressler's memory be eternal!

I would like to give my condolences to the Dressler family. Dr. Dressler was my mom's doctor very briefly a few months ago and he was the one that diagnosed her with lung cancer. What a compassionate, caring, thorough, smart doctor. She said to me today she won't forget how Dr. Dressler told her she would have a long road ahead of her but she would survive. Very saddened to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Dressler was an amazing man. I could not have asked for a more perfect fit for someone to guide me through my cancer treatment. Honest, straitforward, kind, funny and caring. I always felt like he knew exactly who i was and what i needed. God must have needed a good man by his side, this was one of the best. I mourn for his family and for all those who won't have the good fortune to have him by their side as they travel the cancer path.

To the Dressler Family,
Please accept my sincere condolences. Ken was my "Dr House". He said he enjoyed watching the video with his family, especially on vacation. He helped me through the most difficult time of my life. He kept my hopes alive with his compassion, caring and encouragement. He took time to speak with my husband and sons, explaining my care. There is a hole in my heart...I feel lost with his passing. He was the most remarkable doctor I had the pleasure to encounter. I will sorely miss him. May God give your family, and his colleagues and patients strength to deal with such an untimely loss. And to Allison...God bless you and help you during this difficult time as well.

I live in Italy and just learned of Kenny's death a moment ago...I spent many a late night with him doing what he loved, playing hockey, hours after he'd put in more than a full day for all those he loved -- his family and his patients. What a good guy. What a terrible loss. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Dr. D was and will always be my angel. The last time I saw him, I don't know why, but I told him I loved him. Shortly after I heard of his diagnosis. I'm glad I got to tell him how I felt about him. He truly was a hero and I will always keep him in my heart. He is the only doctor who showed he actually cared and the only doctor who made me feel human, not just another patient. The world was a better place because of him. God must have needed angels because it's always the great ones who go too soon. I will miss Dr. D. but I will never, ever forget him.
