1930 - 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of ALAN W. MORTEN, JR., who passed away peacefully at the age of 95 in Charleston, West Virginia.
Alan was born in 1930 to Alan W. and Martha Isabel Walter Morten. He grew up in Oakmont, PA, and attended Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, VA, graduating in 1948. He continued his education at Carnegie Institute of Technology, and later at the University of Pittsburgh, where he obtained both a B.S. in Psychology and Chemistry in 1954 and an M. S. in 1956. Alan also pursued further studies at West Virginia College of Graduate Studies.
Alan had a diverse and accomplished career. He worked as an HR consultant from 1995 to 2014 and held a significant role in HR at Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation from 1960 to 1995. His expertise extended to clinical psychology at Woodville State Hospital, PA, and research assistance at the American Institute for Research in Pittsburgh, PA. Additionally, he contributed to the family business, Valley Heights Nursery Co, and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the USAR, corps of Engineers, Alan was also a talented songwriter.
Alan is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley N. Morten; his sister, Elizabeth Jensen; his children, Michelle Shuttleworth and Glenn Morten; his daughter-in-law, Carol Morten; and his grandchildren, Stephen Howard, Aaron Radcliff, and Victoria Shuttleworth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alan W. and Martha Isabell Walter Morten.
Alan will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We are grateful for the support and kindness shown to us during this difficult time.
Celebration of Alan's life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Tyler Mt. Funeral Home with Celebrant HR Whittington presiding. Entombment will follow in Tyler Mt. Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Gathering of family and friends will be from 1 until time of service at the funeral home.
