Joseph M. Jacobs

Joseph Jacobs, our beloved father, passed away peacefully at the age of 97, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Christmas Day in 1928, Joseph lived a life defined by devotion-to his family, his faith, his country, and his community.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 30 years, Ann Sarkisian; his parents, Elizabeth and Mike Jacob of Safita, Syria; and his brothers, Abraham and George. Joseph leaves behind his three devoted children: Elizabeth (David), Luke (Waad), and Joanne (Tommy); six treasured grandchildren-Annie, Michelle, Mark, Sarah, Joseph, and Jasmine; his dear and doting sister Alice Jacob; loving sister-in-law Rose Kehetian; and blessed with many nieces and nephews across the country.

Joseph was born and raised in the Christy Park neighborhood of McKeesport and graduated from McKeesport High School in 1946. He proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he trained as a radioman-known as "the middle guy" on the airplane. His very first flight was launched from the deck of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saipan. After his honorable discharge, Joseph was accepted to Duke University, but at his parents' request, he returned home after two years and continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh.

While at Pitt, Joseph walked onto the freshman football team. Though small in stature at 5'5" and 119 pounds, he was quick and determined. As a running back, he wore oversized cleats-the smallest available was a size ten and a half despite his size-eight foot-which flapped as he raced down the field. This earned him the affectionate nickname "Shoes," a name that followed him for decades.

Joseph stepped away from football after two years when his father became ill and could no longer work. With two younger siblings still in high school, Joseph rose to the moment. He worked from 3-11 p.m. at Christy Park Works while attending Pitt full-time during the day, helping support his family with quiet strength and responsibility.

As a math major, following graduation Joseph began a distinguished career in tax accounting. He served as a Corporate Auditor with the IRS for over 30 years and later as Deputy Director of Budget and Finance for Allegheny County for more than 14 years. Even after retirement, he continued preparing income taxes and consulting with private clients, remaining remarkably current with ever-changing regulations. He officially retired at the age of 94-a testament to his dedication and sharp mind.

A passionate sports fan, Joseph loyally supported his Pitt Panthers and Pittsburgh professional teams. He traveled to several Pitt Bowl games, attended multiple Super Bowls, witnessed Game Seven of the 1960 World Series at Forbes Field, and was present at Three Rivers Stadium for Franco Harris' legendary "Immaculate Reception."

Joseph was deeply devoted to his faith and was an active parishioner at St. George Orthodox Cathedral, where he served as Treasurer and Council Member for 18 years.

Above all else, Joseph cherished time with his family-whether traveling together, sharing meals at a favorite restaurant, or simply being at home surrounded by those he loved. His life was one of service, perseverance, humility, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Monday, February 9, 2026, from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral.
