Albert Choules Obituary

1926 ~ 2012
Albert Choules Jr., 86, of Salt Lake City, passed away peacefully of natural causes on December 5, 2012.
He was born February 15, 1926 in Driggs, Idaho to Albert and Rula Wilson Choules. He enlisted in the Marine Corps during his senior year of high school in 1944 and served for 2 ½ years. He then served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States. After his return in 1948, he earned his undergraduate education from LDS Business College and Brigham Young University. While at BYU, he met his sweetheart, Rosemary Phillips while they were both serving as student body officers. In 1952, he and Rosemary were married in the Idaho Falls Temple.
After earning his undergraduate degree, Albert applied and was accepted to Harvard University where he earned his Masters in Business Administration. After graduation and a short stint with Union 76 Oil in California, they moved to Phoenix and worked at Western Savings & Loan Association where he eventually became Senior Vice-President. In 1971 he acquired Romney International Hotels which he ran until he was called to full-time church service.
Albert had a great love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and enjoyed serving in the Church. He served in two bishoprics, as a counselor in the Scottsdale Stake Presidency, then as Stake President from 1974 to 1980. In 1980 he was called with Rosemary to serve for three years as President of the New York, New York City Mission. A year after their return, Rosemary passed away from cancer. In 1987, Albert dated and married his beautiful and loving companion of 25 years, Marilyn Jeppson Lowry in the Salt Lake Temple. Their life of service continued. Albert served in the Mesa Temple as a Sealer before being called from 1988 to 1993 to serve as a General Authority for the Church, spending much of their experience headquartered in Germany and building the Church in Europe. After his release, he served as bishop of the Emigration Stake Single's Ward for six years. In 2003 Albert and Marilyn were called as President and Matron of the Mesa Temple.
Albert leaves a legacy of faith and discipleship as a gift to his family. We always knew how much he loved us and the Lord. His love of the temple was his hallmark and forever changed his life. Whether serving in a position of leadership or sitting tenderly with a grandchild in quiet conversation, he will forever be remembered for his genuine love and compassion. We only hope to carry on his tremendous legacy.
Albert is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rosemary and brother Tom.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, children; Bill (Melanie), Bob (Sharon), and Tammy (Larry) Pinnock and stepchildren Michelle (John) Macfarlane, Jim (Sophie) Lowry and John (Stephanie) Lowry, 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Albert is also survived by his four sisters, Lois Hoffman, Mary Harper, Dorothy Douglass, and Lou Jean Tingey.
The family would like to thank the loving and capable staff at Canyon Creek Assisted Living Center and Hospice of Utah who took such wonderful care of our husband, father and grandfather. We are so grateful for their never-ending care. A viewing will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on December 14 at the LDS Holladay 27th Ward building at 5450 South Holladay Blvd in Holladay, Utah, and a viewing and funeral service will be held on December 15th at the same location; the viewing beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Albert will be interred in Phoenix, Arizona. He never did like shoveling the snow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Missionary Fund or Perpetual Education Fund. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.memorialutah.com

I was blessed and privileged to work with Elder Choules for two years as his secretary/assistant while he was in Salt Lake. He was the kindest, most compassionate man I have ever known. It was wonderful to get to know Marilyn also. Even after he was released he would occasionally call me. Will miss him very much.

Dear Tammy and Larry: What a sweet tribute to your dad. He was an amazing man and he raised an equally amazing daughter. And although it is hard losing your dad, isn't it wonderful to know that you will be able to see him, and your beautiful mom again! It gives me chills just thinking about it. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Please remember how much we love you both!

Dear Marilyn, Karen and I are sad to hear that we have lost Albert for a while. He is such a wonderful soul, a leader in the Kingdom and in his profession and business, a major contributor to the Church at home and abroad, and within his family. We, you, and his parents are so grateful for his character and contributions. We have lost for now a dear friend. I have known him since in my mid-twenties and you, Marilyn, since our BYU days. I was grateful to serve with him in our Quorum. I was so very pleased to know that his finale as a General Authority was to the Driggs Idaho stake where his father presided for so long. We always were thrilled to see you and Albert serving together. Karen and I will always cherich your friendship and look forward to seeing you. Blessings and our love.

President Choules had a powerful impact on my years as a youth. He and Rosemary were two of the most loving, caring people I've ever known. President Choules had a way of guiding the youth of the Scottsdale Stake and keeping the bar set at its highest standard. His impact will be felt for generations. When Rosemary passed we all wept with him. She was a women of gentle strength & sincere charity. My love is sent to his children Bill, Bob & Tammy and all those who loved him and will miss him. The is the passing of a great man and chosen spirit who fulfilled a mission of love and direction to the youth of the church and will be dearly missed.

Our Dear Friend Marilyn and family,

We will miss our wonderful friend Elder Choules! We cherish our memories so much in Europe with both of you. What a great couple! Your support of each other was such a wonderful example for us as we spent time with you two at mission presidents seminars, during the time we were presiding over the Spain Bilbao Mission. And it was so nice to have our friendship continue through the years. We always looked so forward to your Christmas cards! We always said, "We want to be like the Choules when we grow up!" and we are trying to emulate your service as we serve as President and Matron of the Bogota Colombia Temple. We will miss our dear Albert choules and will alway and forever be grateful we were able to have both of you in our lives throughout the years.

We won't be able to attend the funeral, as we live in Bogota, but our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We know our kind Heavenly Father has his arms around you, Marilyn. We know you can feel His love and His great desire to calm you when you are lonely. You will be so well taken care of by your family!
