Alfred ADAMS Obituary

ADAMS, JR., Alfred Thompson Age 85, died peacefully on May 21st. Born August 22, 1927 in Nashville, TN to Alfred Thompson and Karin Hughes Adams. Graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy in 1944. Served in the U.S. Navy 1945-1946. Graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Engineering in 1949 and Vanderbilt School of Law in 1952. He was elected to the Tennessee General Assembly in 1953. Married Peggy Joyce Keylon of Manchester in 1954, she passed away in 1999. Alf practiced law in Nashville from 1952 until he retired in 2002. He moved to Beersheba Springs, TN to live in the log home he built for his family. He did residential construction, surveying, farming, beekeeping and caretaking of the Adams family homes on the mountain. He married Patricia Riley Fleming of Greensboro, NC in 2003. Alf was a deacon and elder of the Downtown Presbyterian Church, and managed the church property for 20 years. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, a charter member of the Nashville City Club, Director and General Council of the Nashville Union Rescue Mission. In Beersheba, he was a member and song leader at the Grace united Methodist Church, and a member of the Grundy County Republican Executive Committee and the Election Commission. His love for Grundy County lasted his whole life. He was devoted to the conservation of the natural surroundings, as well as his friends there. He turned a dream into reality by establishing homes there that generations to come will enjoy. He is survived by his sisters, Karin Adams Stewart, Rosalie Adams Crispin, Mary Adams Wiley, Sue Howell Adams (Peter) and his brothers, Benjamin Strickler Adams and John Phillips Adams. He is also survived by his 5 children, Jencie Adams Tipton (Waymon), Karin Adams Barro (Greg), Peggy Adams Luton (Ken), Sue Howell Keyes, Alfred Adams III (Jennifer) and 20 grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Like Family Home Health, Alive Hospice, and his dear caregiver, Julia Jones. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. A Memorial service honoring his life will be Thursday, June 20th at 11 a.m., with visitation 1 hour prior to the service at the Downtown Presbyterian Church. He will be buried at Grace Chapel in Beersheba Springs.

Only today,somehow, learned of Alf's passing. I thought a lot of Alf, and could tell a bunch of stories. At once a learned man as well as country boy at heart. Alf was plain spoken, which suited me just fine. I recall doing some work for him many years ago and when I gave him my bill, he told me I didn't charge enough. He made a recommendation as to how much, and told me to start doing it with everyone, and if they didn't like it, to come talk to him. In more recent years I would see him at the lumber co or Chinese buffet, and would greet him with "T for Thompson" since his middle and my last names were the same.He seemed to enjoy that. Once as I was having supper with my wife and mom, he came up to our table and I introduced them, and he complimented me on the two lovely ladies I was with, in a most gracious and mannerly way. I drove past his ranch today and saw the high grass where his garden would be, and felt an emptiness. Rest well Mr. Adams, hope we meet in paradise. My sincerest condolences to all the family, whom I have met or known over the years.

Sorry to hear of Alf's passing, my prayers for your family. I met Alf after he moved to the mountain and worked with him to promote the Republican cause in Grundy County. My fondest memory was our booth at the Beersheba Arts and Crafts fair using Alf's "Civil war operating table" to display our literature.

I have heard so much about what a great man and attorney Mr Adams was. I wish I had the pleasure of meeting him. I know he will be sorely missed by many. I do know his daughter and she is a class act.

Alf was a friend of mine thru the Earthman family and Beersheba. With his notepad in his pocket and his gentle demeanor he shared his wisdom and experience with me and I will surely miss him. God bless Alf Adams.

Alf was a friend and gracious neighbor to us after we obtained property in 2006 down the road from him. We enjoyed him in church and Rotary. Alf immediately involved himself in our interests and drew us into his. We shall miss his humor and twinkle and forever stand amazed at what he achieved through his curiosity and intelligence.
