Andrea Volpe Obituary

East Lyme - Andrea (Steucek) Volpe, 60, of Niantic, formerly of Wethersfield, loving and devoted wife for 24 years of Raymond A. Volpe, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Hartford, Oct. 2, 1955, and is the daughter of the Jeannine (Aubin) Steucek of Wethersfield and the late Albert Charles Steucek.

Andrea earned her bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and MBA from the University of Connecticut and was formerly a high school science teacher. Andrea's passion was the outdoors, hiking, camping, skiing, biking, swimming, golfing and tennis. She embraced being a "soccer mom", never missing the opportunity to cheer on Ross and A.J. She was especially happy getting her hands dirty in her flower garden and watching sunsets on the beach. After her retirement, tennis and golf with the "ladies" established some warm and loving friendships. Andrea was an avid cyclist, once biking cross country with a group of friends and recently completed a bicycle tour of Tuscany, Italy, with her husband, Ray. Andrea also loved horses and volunteered at High Hopes Therapeutic Horseback Riding in Old Lyme. She was a member of First Church of Christ, Wethersfield, where she volunteered and was a member of the handbell choir. Andrea lived life on her own terms.

Besides her husband and mother, Andrea will be dearly missed by two sons, Ross H. Volpe, a master's student at the University of Colorado, and Lt. Albert "A.J." Volpe, serving in the U.S. Army; a brother, Thomas Steucek and wife, Erika, of Portsmouth, N.H.; nieces, Elizabeth and Cara; and her sister-in-law, Beth Steucek of Rye, N.H. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Betty Volpe and Daniel and Michelle Volpe of New York; niece, Suzanne and her husband, Zac; nephews, Dan and his wife, Amanda, and John Volpe.

Besides her father, Andrea was predeceased by a brother, Peter Steucek and a sister, Wendy Forte.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at First Church of Christ, 250 Main St., Wethersfield. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Andrea's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St., I-91 Tech Center, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or High Hopes Therapeutic Riding, 36 Town Woods Road, Old Lyme, CT 06371.

Funeral arrangements are by the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, Wethersfield.

Andrea and I had a lot of fun times in the late 80's skiing in Aspen, up in Vermont with her brother Tom some weekends, golfing with the Emhart Corp ladies golf league. We stayed in touch through when she moved to NY, got married and had her first son. Then life got busier for both of us as it does, and we lost touch with each other. After awhile, I lost my old address book. I tried a couple of times to locate her online and was not successful. Facebook was not available and the internet search engines weren't what they are today. Then recently I started to digitize my old photo albums with my iphone and it made me think more of Andrea. This week I searched again online and was devastated to see Andrea's obituary. Don't ever hesitate to reach out to loved ones and those you have lost touch with. Rest in peace Andrea. It comforts me to see you had a full and active life with 2 great sons and husband living on the beautiful coast of Niantic.

I graduated with Andrea in 1973. Little did I know that 6 years from then, I would marry her cousin, Jon and become part of the Steucek clan. I was so shocked and saddened to hear of her death. May you rest in peace, Andrea.

There's a song by the choral group RENT called SEASONS OF LOVE that asks how do you measure a year in the life of a woman or a man? An engineer or actuary may give a technical answer like a year is 525,600 minutes. But Andrea's last year can measured in love. She spent it with the family and friends that she loved. She spent it traveling and biking and golfing doing the things she loved. Maybe that last year was more intense than some people spend 10 years and that's what really matters.

Ray and sons, You were so fortunate to have Andrea as wife and mother. Her loving care, exuberant personality, and gracious lady endeared herself to everyone she came in contact with. I especially enjoyed our chats over dinner at any of the restaurants we went to. I will greatly miss her wonderful smile and and our time together. .. God Bless you all. Rita Ravosa
