Anne Madden Obituary

MADDEN, Anne Armitage, nearly 100, of Richmond, formerly of Portsmouth, passed away on July 24, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Madden; and by three sisters, one of whom was her twin. Cherishing her memory are her two children and their spouses, Bob (and Debbie) Madden and Joanne (and John) Deaton; her two grandchildren (Kyle and Travis Madden); and four great-grandchildren (Vaughn, Brooks, Evelyn and Eleanor). Anne was born in Richmond and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1939. After high school, she attended the College of William & Mary, from which she graduated in 1943. Later, she earned her master's degree at Old Dominion University. While at William & Mary, she was President of Women's Student Government and belonged to Chi Omega sorority. She played tennis, basketball and field hockey and was ultimately inducted into the William & Mary Athletic Hall of Fame. After college, she served in the U.S. Navy Waves as a Lieutenant JG in the Bureau of Naval Personnel. She married Joseph F. Madden in 1948 and they remained married for 44 years until his death in 1993. Joe and Anne lived in Portsmouth and she taught elementary school in Chesapeake until she retired in 1983. They were involved members at Green Acres Presbyterian Church and belonged to Elizabeth Manor Country Club in Portsmouth for many years, where her golfing buddies called her "Awesome Anne." Anne had a passion for golf and had three holes-in-one. She truly loved her many friends in Portsmouth. Anne had a wonderful personality and a contagious smile that is reflected in this photo that was taken just three days before her death. Anne was loved and admired by everyone who knew her. A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 22, at Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, Va. 23113. A private graveside service will be held at Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Green Acres Presbyterian Church, 3135 Hanley Ave., Portsmouth, Va. 23703.

Thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time.

I remember Mrs. Madden fondly as my fourth grade teacher. She was a kind, sweet lady, and I always felt like she truly cared.

The picture here is exactly how I remember her. She certainly had a bright smile!

Thank you for sharing her with many young Western Branch students.
