San Luis Obispo, California - Barbara Helen Hoff died suddenly and too soon at the age of eighty years.
Born Barbara Helen Stewart in Los Angeles, California to Mildred and Donald Stewart, Barbara grew up in Santa Monica and graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1958. Barbara studied at Pomona College, and then received her bachelor's degree from UCLA.
She married Lowell Ronald Hoff in 1961. In 1965 Barbara and Lowell moved to Los Osos where they became the owners of Sheltered Acre Nursery and where Barbara became Music Director and Organist at Trinity United Methodist Church. They raised their children, Ron, Donna, and Eric in Los Osos.
With gifts and grace Barbara taught, led, formed, inspired, supported, and accompanied musicians throughout San Luis Obispo County. An accomplished pianist, Barbara was founding accompanist for the Vocal Arts Ensemble, and principal keyboardist for the SLO Symphony for over forty years. In 2011 she was an honoree from the San Luis Obispo County Performing Arts Center Honors.
Barbara's devotion to and love for her family was virtuosic. She is survived by her husband, Lowell; by her children Eric Hoff (Leone Avery) and Donna Hoff; by her grandsons Axel and Radley, and by her brother Jim Lockwood-Stewart (Odette). She was preceded in death by son Ron who was killed in an automobile accident in 1990.
Barbara will be remembered with love by extended family and friends, faith and art communities, and everyone for whom her hospitality, intelligence, encouragement, humor, and beauty were gifts of grace.
A memorial service will take place at 1pm on Sunday, May 1st at Trinity United Methodist Church, 490 Los Osos Valley Rd. Los Osos, CA 93402. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Morro Coast Audubon Society. There will be a private graveside service.
