When I was about 4 years old I was climbing on a walnut tree in the Chipmans back yard, I slipped and caught myself hanging from a branch. I screamed in terror at the thought of falling to my "death". Sister Chipman came running out of her house and reached up and set me safely down on the ground. Evidently I was only about 4 feet in the air. I loved that sweet lady

I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to meet Betty Jeanne. I was immediately impressed with her gracious and loving way, which radiated by her beautiful smile. Unfortunately, I was traveling at the time of her death and only became aware of her passing today. May I extend my deepest sympathy to her children, family and friends.

I served with Sister Chipman in Washington DC. She was always very proper and taught us sister missionaries how to sit, stand and sing. She is undoubtedly one of the most eloquent women I have ever met. She will be missed.

Jamie, my heart goes out to you and I pray God comfort you. I am so grateful for the years I enjoyed as her student and friend. Thank you for caring for her with such tenderness. I will be gone on the days of the viewing and funeral but will have all of you in my heart.

To Betty Jeanne's family - I'm grateful to have had her as a vocal teacher through a difficult time in my life. Her rich gifts set me free to sing with freedom & joy. She lives on in every student she's touched as performer or teacher. Peace and blessings. Barbara Jenkins Kaysville, UT

My heart is overflowing with memories. When I was sixteen my dad called Betty Jeanne on the phone and said, "I have a daughter who wants to sing." For the next twenty years plus, I had the honor and blessing of being trained, disciplined, and mentored by this gracious lady. Next to my parents, Betty Jeanne had a greater influence on my young life than anyone I know. I have fond memories of entering her home studio each week. She was always beautifully dressed and coiffed, generous with her encouragement, and full of sage advice about life in general. Betty Jeanne, I wish I could have joined the others in song at your funeral. With love, till we meet again...

"Show kindness whenever possible. Show it to the people in front of you, the people coming up behind you, and the people with whom you are running neck and neck. It will vastly improve the quality of your own life, the lives of others, and the state of the world."
— Ann Patchett
This quote amply describes Betty Jeanne to perfection. She continues to inspire me, as a woman, teacher and a human being. After attending her service today, I am renewed in my efforts to continue learning, to offer compassion to those in need, to teach to the best of my ability and to motivate others to do the same. Thank you, BJ.
John and I send our love, thoughts and prayers to Betty Jeanne's family, friends and many students.

Betty Jeanne changed the course of my life when I sang for her as a 16 year old kid. Her advice? STOP singing with the radio and get a voice teacher! :) I sang with her as a student at the U and appreciate all she taught me! I have taught hundreds of students over the years utilizing that knowledge gained.
To her wonderful family... Thanks for the incredible memorial service today celebrating her life!!! All that was said and sung was inspired - she was very happy today as we recognized and appreciated her legacy! Thank you, Betty Jeanne...until we meet again.

Betty Jeanne Chipman is one of the most influential people that shaped me as a teenager. I was privileged to take singing lessons from her from 1963-1967. Her support of me as a person was life changing as well as teaching me to sing properly. I learned so very much from her. I'm sure the heavenly choir will be glad she has returned.

It was wonderful to associate with Betty Jeanne in the Saville Family organization. My mother (Eleanor Wright Young) was particularly fond of Betty and should Blossom Gray not be able to sing at her funeral, then she requested Betty Jeanne which was done. Betty possesed a great voice and a magnificent aura to be one to be remembered. My condolences to the family with the understanding that this separation is but for a moment.

Dear Chipman Family, I will always cherish my memories of your mother. What a lady. She treated me and my family as though we were her own. I am sure many others would say the same thing. Such Christ like love! With Betty Jeanne singing and my Mom playing the organ heaven will be blessed with beautiful music.

Betty Jeanne Chipman is one of the most lovely and gracious people I have known. I was honored to be her student at the University of Utah as were many of my siblings in her home. She inspired me with love, beauty, and care in every lesson. She has left us a wonderful legacy by nurturing not only our voices, but our souls. All our love to the Chipman family.

The Emeritus Ladies of the Tabernacle Choir will remember Betty Jeanne as one of our deceased members at our annual luncheon in May.
I am sure that she taught many members of the Tabernacle Choir. I have her book, Singing with Mind, Body, and Soul. I remember going to her 90th birthday party.
May she sing with the Choirs above!
Sincerely,

I didn't ever meet your mother, but I have had fun glimpse into who she was. My family and I currently own the home that she lived in for many years on 3020 South. On many occasions I have told people where I live and they have made the connection that it is the "Chipman Home". They then of course go on and on about the wonderful memories they have of being here in this home and learning from Betty. It is then followed up by how beautiful the gardens were that Chip maintained (I wish I could match his efforts). So not having ever having met either of them, it is easy to see how great they were. I offer my sympathies to her family and gratitude for such a great legacy she has left.

In the midst of a year long battle with vocal distress, I had the opportunity to meet Betty Jeanne in her home studio. That brief encounter changed my vocal career and opened up new possibilities. I'm so grateful for her willingness to share her knowledge with others. She will be missed, but her techniques and methods will continue to benefit countless others.

Although she will certainly be missed by everyone whose lives she touched, her 93 years of love and service is definitely a cause for celebration! Thanks to Betty Jeanne's firm but patient tutelage, I have been able to build so many wonderful musical memories from high school up to the present (though I was never committed enough to live up to her high expectations). I also cherish the memories of traveling with her and Chip (and an assortment of young college-age women) to Europe. It was truly a pivotal experience in my life!

It was a great pleasure to meet Betty Jeanne on my various recital visits to Temple Square. I worked closely with her when I came to be Administrator of the International Vocal School one year, where I saw her at work with the young singers who gained much from her guidance. I greatly value the copy of Betty Jeanne's book, in which she inscribed a beautiful message. Her long life has been a blessing to so many pupils as well as friends and colleagues. May she rest in the peace that she has earned. My sincere condolences to the Chipman family

Dear Chipman family,
Rob and I send our love to you. I enjoyed so much working for your mother in her vocal studio as an accompanist. I was always amazed at the vocal coaching she so graciously yet effectively gave to each student. She was a mentor to me as well as her vocal students and treated me with kindess in the many years after. I know her memory will live on for many.

I was lucky to tour Europe with Betty Jeanne and a group of music students (of which I was not...I was a friend of Jamie's)the summer of 1974! I will never forget her graciousness and patience with a bunch of not close to being adult kids. She was cool and calm and I will always remember her kindness towards me. Years later I was always happy to brag that I went to Europe with Betty Jeanne Chipman!

My heart is so full of gratitude for having had the honor to associate with such an "elect lady". She was my musical momma, my mentor and my friend. I look forward to the day we will meet again and I'll be able to accompany her in heaven! Thanks to Jamie for taking such good care of her that she was able to accomplish her mission clear to the end. My sympathies to the whole family. I will miss my Thursdays with my BJ.

Betty Jeanne's influence extended well beyond the USA and I write from New Zealand to say how much I enjoyed knowing her, visiting with her when in Salt Lake City and what a wonderful legacy she leaves in her book which my students read regularly. I treasure the copy that Betty Jeanne gave me personally in July 2010, and the message she wrote in it. Her passing leaves a big hole in the vocal fraternity, but not as big as the hole that she will leave in her family. I pray for strength and courage for you all as you farewell Betty Jeanne.

Dear Family of this beautiful lady,
What a happy day for her and a sad one for the world! I am so grateful she finally published her book. Through it and the generations of singers she has taught, her love of music, cheerful heart, and testimony will continue to bless the world. We loved both of your parents and pray you will feel comfort in knowing they are together. I am the mother of one of her students, Rachel Rowe Morris.

Dear Jamie and Chipman Family,
I will forever be grateful that my path crossed with Betty Jeanne's. She took me under her beautiful wing and shaped my soul with her kindness and generosity. I remember the day I competed in the regional level of NATSAA and she came (accompanied by Jamie) to Ogden to watch me perform. It meant so much to see her face in the audience. This is just one of many memories I have of her example of love and service. Thank you for sharing your Mother with me. With Love, Clara Hurtado Lee

My darling, sweet, legendary teacher, mentor and friend has "slipped the surly bonds of earth" and is in the arms of her beloved Chip now. Betty Jeanne was everything that personified an "elect lady". I have imagined her being welcomed by a heavenly host of thousands eager to see her smiling face and hear her angelic voice raised in song. My heart is full of joy for her, but sorrow for all of us she leaves behind. I wanted to hold her here with us forever! But, I also understand she's been called for a greater work beyond the veil. I can never thank her enough for all that she taught me about singing, giving, teaching, loving and living. She inspired everyone she met to be their very best self. She made everyone feel like they were her "special favorite"! I will be forever blessed to have known this remarkable woman.

Vickee, sorry to hear of your mothers passing. The story of our trip to Florida with our mothers and your father is still one I tell my kids and grandkids. Of course when I wanted singing lessons I went to your mom. Later in life as I was active in music I distinctly remember standing in a recording studio hearing the first strains of a song and thinking..now how did Betty Jeanne tell me to do this.
I'm sure there's a peace in your heart when you think of your mothers life as a life well lived.

My beloved cousins ... what a heritage we have had. How grateful I am to have felt the anchor your mother and grandmother has always given to all her family. I have felt so honored that my mother named me after her big sister; who she loved with every part of her. It means even more to me now that those two sisters are together again.
I have as well, seen your mother and grandmother, as our own shinning star. Though the world may be darker now without her, the heavens are all the more bright. May we have eyes and faith enough to see her. I will love you forever my auntie Bean, my family.
