Dec. 24, 1919 - Sept. 13, 2011 FORT SMITH, AR BYRON CLAY CRAVENSByron Clay Cravens was born at home on December 24, 1919, in Prairie View, Arkansas, to Earle and Gladys Cravens. He departed this life from Fort Smith, Arkansas on September 13, 2011. Hunt, gave his life to the store which had been founded in 1919 by his father R.T. Hunt. Hunts' sold their business in 1988. The third segment of his life saw him retire from active business leadership and enter into various community activities, highlighted by his service as a director of the Board of First National Bank since 1978, which included 15 years as Chairman of the Audit Committee and 25 years as a member of the Loan and Discount Committee. He retired from the board in 2009. Byron was a "People Person" and found places of service on the Boy Scout Westark Council, as a Trustee of St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, as a Trustee of the Methodist Nursing Home, as a member of the Parking Authority, a member of the Board of the Marvin Altman Physical Fitness Center, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Arkansas-Oklahoma Rodeo-Fair Board, and a member of the Board of Hanna Oil & Gas Company, along with various official responsibilities in the First United Methodist Church of Fort Smith. Dearest Mrs Cravens, Martha, Pam and Tom,
What a gift of service and Christian leadership Mr. Cravens was to every community. My era of memories were the 1970's and how we all loved shopping at Hunt's. I also remember sitting in the pew in front of you at First Methodist on the rare occassion I would "wander" from my church home at Central Presbyterian. I never knew about his Duke theology degree! How fortunate for Fort Smith to have had him. May wonderful memories comfort you and suround your family always. With great affection, Nancy Naucke Buist

My deepest sympathies to Byron Cravens’s family.
I first met Byron when I joined the Boy Scout Troop at the May Ave Methodist
Church. It was a renovated from a tavern at that time.
I liked Byron so well that I started attending church there. He was very encouraging
to our youth group and shepherded us through our teen years. I am very grateful for
having him as part of my life.

The youth group back in Ponca City's First Methodist Church in the early 1950s will always remember Byron Cravens, our wonderful minister. He was loved by everyone. He took us to church camp at Roman Nose near Watonga every summer, just for four days. But those four days were the best ever! The tradition was always the same: one night of camp, he would demonstrate his ability to do hypnotism, with five or six of the campers on chairs up in front of the group. He could always get one or two pretty deep into sleep. We were all amazed and impressed. It was the favorite night of camp! In addition to the wonderful camp memories, his sermons, even for young kids, are remembered as full of warmth and meaning. He will always have a special place in our hearts.

I didn't get to know Bryon Well until about 10 years ago and we had a lot of good visits about church, banking, politics and the Good Samaritan Clinic. He was a good supporter and a fine man. He will be missed in Fort Smith. My condolences to his family.

We wish to express our deepest sympathy to Byron's family. Byron was my pastor at First Christian Church in Ponca City, and officiated at our wedding 55 years ago last March. We have never forgotten his sound counsel to us before the wedding. My fondest memories of his years in Ponca were the birth of Byron and Linda's youngest child, and the fact that he helped Linda color her hair. What a wonderful life they had together.

To the Cravens Family,
My deep sympathies to you all. Byron was a major influence in my early life, he confirmed me in the church in a little renovated tavern called May Avenue Methodist Church. He encouraged so many of us in the youth group of the time...my memories are rich beyond measure because of Byron and Linda, both. I rejoice in his life and give thanks for his service. My prayers are with you all.

To the Cravens Family,
We are greatly saddened to learn of Byron's passing. The kindnesses provided me as a young man by both Byron and Linda Lee have never been forgotten. Three decades have passed since Byron Cravens officiated at our wedding. I most remember him for his composure, genuine interest in being of assistance, and good counsel. I am sure he is now a leading citizen in his New Community.

I want to express our deepest sympathies to the Cravens family at the passing of Byron. He was certainly a Man amoung Men and truly One of God's Saints. Years ago as I worked to expand the physical plant at 1st Church, Byron was a solid stalwort of encouragement to me as I led the building committee. His wisdom will certainly be missed by not only me but many whom he encouraged. God Bless Byron and his life.

"A mighty oak has fallen in the forest and left a gaping hole
against the sky!" Those were the words used by the minister
at First Baptist in OKC with which to begin the funeral of the
late Senator Robert S.Kerr - and they are the ones that come
to my mind today as I think of Byron.

I regret that I/we cannot be there this morning due to being in Dallas, but my heart goes out to all of you! What
wonderful memories I have of the many special times we
spent together at Nichols Hills Church and even beyond.
They are etched in my memory forever. Working with Byron, learning the ministry from him, looking up to him
and respecting him greatly, using his as my mentor. And
I think of all the days I got to share with Tom and Pam in
our youth groups (Martha was too small then to be in one
of the groups), ping-pong matches and "penny hikes" and
the new youth center and so much more. And the time we
stayed with you all in FS when we were enroute home from
Duke, and the visit to the ranch in Roland, and your visits
to our church when it was on the NW Expressway and then
when we moved up on North MacArthur. And all of the
comments about you all over the years from people in our
church who knew you in one way or the other. The many
times that Bill Henry and I had lunch and talked about
Byron, or conversations with Bill and Nancy Whitten about
you all, and the memories and connections just go on and
on.

I simply want to say that the impact of Byron's life and
ministry upon mine is huge, and the friendship with all of
you is so deeply touching, and Kipp and I wish to goodness we could be there and would were it not our
youngest son's 40th birthday and being in Dallas with him
to celebrate the special occasion. But I tell you, when the
clock strikes 11, my thoughts and prayers will turn to Fort
Smith and the celebration you will be having for a GREAT
man who lived in an uncannily common way and blessed
thousands of us in deep and life-changing ways. He was
so special, and one of these days all of us are going to be
back home again, and family again, and celebrate anew in
the kingdom beyond this world all that we loved and known and cherished here ... and this time forever!

God bless all of you - Linda and Pam and Tom and Martha
- as you mark this moment together and are enjoined by
thousands across the land.

To the Cravens Family from one of the Hunt's Crew:
Mr. C was someone I respected. I admire the leadership that forged employees into a true Hunt's family. I am glad I had the opportunity to know him and become a part of the Hunt's era. A quote of his (regarding himself) went something like this: "The old man was tough, but he was fair." Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

In the early 70's I called on Byron as a manufacturer's rep. We had lines that Hunt could sell....right price, etc. But Byron would never buy from me because we also sold Wal-Mart. My boss, a Powerful Salesman, made a trip with me and we met with Byron. Sure enough, Byron bought at least one of our lines, maybe all. So the rest of the trip my boss was pretty puffed up. Until we got back to Dallas and received the canellation notice. Byron was a smart and hardworking man who taught me a lot about salesmanship.
Thank you, Byron.

Mr. Cravens is a very special man that will always be in my memory and heart. He always made sure he spoke to everyone he could when he walked into the bank at the Main Bank. We would always know when he came thru the back doors and we had a smile on for him or else he would make certain you were smiling when he left your desk. He loved to make certain that people did their very best and were rewarded for their best. Great man will be rewarded in Heaven. I can see him now talking to the Lord about things that he had "questions" about....He loved everyone and everyone loved him. He has been missed and will be missed in the future. God bless your family at this time of grieving. Please be assured that he is in the hands of the Lord and is happy and healthy now.
