CAREN NEDERLANDER Obituary

NEDERLANDER--Caren E. PhD. Caren Elaine Nederlander, PhD, of Michigan and New York, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, surrounded by her husband Edwin B. Mishkin and her two sons, Robert Nederlander, Jr. and Eric Nederlander. Dr. Nederlander was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and attended Mumford High School. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan, where she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Caren became a clinical psychologist, licensed marriage counselor and a registered art therapist, conducting her practice for many years as the director of the Franklin Center for Behavior Change in Southfield, Michigan. Caren was also a photo artist, whose works have been exhibited at the United States Botanical Garden in Washington and across the country. Caren was married for twenty years to Robert Nederlander, Sr., a member of the Nederlander theater organization, and they have two sons. Caren later moved to New York City. In 2000, she met and married Mr. Mishkin, then a senior partner of the international law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen and Hamilton LLP. Following her motto to "Live Life to the Fullest"-- which the couple had inscribed on the park bench at the Chess and Checkers Pavilion in Central Park that they dedicated to the Central Park Conservancy several years ago--the pair travelled the world for many years while also enjoying an active life in New York City as well as summers at their home in East Hampton. In addition to her two sons, Robert Jr. (Suzanne) and Eric (Nancy), Dr. Nederlander is survived by four grandchildren, Richard, William, Ava and Mira, and her sisters, Barbara Lieberman and Peggy Lowe. Caren was the daughter of the late Morris and Janet Berman.

I have recently retired from my practice as a clinical psychologist and was looking up your mother's contact information to let her know. I was sad to find she has passed. I was the one who groomed Babe. I remember how she mentored me and had a wonderful and delightful presence. I became a clinical psychologist and was very influenced by your mother. I have many memories of Caren and if you would like to contact me, please feel free to [email protected]

We are so sorry to hear about your mother. She was so talented in so many ways. In fact, we were talking about her last week (no joke!) because my mom still has the sofas that your mom helped her pick out in the early 70s!! We send you our condolences.
