CAROLYN MATTINGLY Obituary

CAROLYN C. MATTINGLY
Suddenly on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, Carolyn C. Mattingly of Potomac, MD. She was the lifelong love of her husband, C. Richard Mattingly for over 44 years; the adored and loving mother of Christin Mattingly (Alex) Lewis; cherished daughter of Alex and Betty Combs; dear sister of Marilyn Cannon, Bryan (Susan) Combs, and Catherine (John) Owens; daughter-in-law of Charles and Bettie Mattingly; sister-in-law of Barbara Middleton; and aunt of Olivia and Michael Owens, Steven and Lisa Middleton. Carolyn is also survived by countless loving friends and extended family here in the Washington, DC area and throughout the country. No woman on this planet cared more about those she loved and called a friend than Carolyn. She not only gave endlessly to them, she was untiring in her kindness and in her deep commitment to so many causes. She was her husband's soul mate and partner in the fight against cystic fibrosis. She was a former Chair of the Churchill High School Boosters, Commissioner and past Chair of the Maryland Commission for Women and a member of the National Association of Women Judges: Women Moving Forward Conference, along with many other contributions to the community. When not volunteering, she was a real estate agent throughout the DC metro area.Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at www.cff.org. Her family plans to establish a special project in the near future in her memory and in honor of the impact she has made in her much too short a time with us.

Saturday, October 11th was the Women Moving Forward conference that Carolyn was working with us to prepare when we lost her. There was a lot of energy among the women who are returning to society after serving their sentence at MCI-W. The flowers that you, Rich and Christin, put throughout the facility added warmth and welcome to the day. Every time I saw them as I walked about I remembered Carolyn with the fondness and love that I'm sure was the reason you put them there. We miss her very much. She has left a hole in the world.

Dear Christin and Family,

I am so sorry for your tragic loss. It was so terribly sad to hear the news. I just wanted you to know that your mother was one of the nicest and kindest parents that I ever met as a classroom teacher and coach. She was always helpful, cheerful, smiling and encouraging and generous with her time. You shared these same qualities. In time, I hope your family will find comfort and peace. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
In deepest sympathy,

Dear Rich and Christin: May the warmth of memories of Carolyn's love wrap you and family and friends in comfort. I still can't believe she's gone. We were so very blessed to have such a wonderful soul to share in our lives. I served with her from 2006 on the Commission and know it is a blow to all the women of our state. I met you, Christin, at a couple of events. She was always so proud of you. Carolyn was a vital and valuable member of the Steering Committee for the Women Moving Forward Conference from its inception and her contributions were substantial..She will be missed so very much. I was totally blessed to know her; she was the one who invited me to be part of the first conference and I served with her ever since. At our last WMF meeting, just two weeks ago, she stopped me to ask how I was doing and I was able to express to her my great gratitude for inviting me to join her in her projects and for all she did. Her loss leaves a hole in the world.
