Charles Alton "Chuck" Day of Montgomery, Texas, age 87, met his Savior in glory on July 26, 2025 after a long battle with cancer.
Born on October 6, 1937 in Delaware, Ohio, Charles was the only child of Dr. Corliss Alton and Maud Irene Jeffrey Day. As a young adult, he received both a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Arts in Education from The Ohio State University, where he met Sylvia Louise Ecker. They married in 1959 and Chuck took great pride in the longevity of their 52 year marriage, which blessed them with five daughters. After Sylvia's passing in 2011, Charles found love again with his current wife, Charlotte Montgomery Day, whom he married in 2013.
Chuck came to know our Lord Jesus through his wife, Sylvia. He worked determinedly to grow in his faith and deepen his relationship with Christ. He actively participated in the church community as a Sunday School Department Leader and a Deacon at First Baptist Church, Conroe, Texas. He reflected fondly on playing the role of a wise man in the annual church nativity pageant. Chuck believed wholeheartedly in the power of prayer. He constantly interceded for his family and the leadership of our country, and implored others to do the same.
Although he had a passion for education and spent years in the classroom as both a high school chemistry and physics teacher, the needs of his growing family necessitated a change in profession. Chuck pursued a long and distinguished career in multiple technology roles and worked for highly regarded entities such as IBM and RG Barry in Columbus, Ohio. The family relocated to Conroe, Texas in 1982 and Chuck commuted daily to Houston, where he worked for First City Bank and then EDS. He concluded his career working for the City of Austin before retiring and returning to the Conroe area.
Chuck led a full life pursuing the hobbies and interests he loved, including watching professional and collegiate sports, playing golf and traveling. He began playing golf as an adult and became quite good at the sport with a sub 10 handicap. His sons-in-law admired his consistent accuracy and exceptional putting. Chuck found respite on the golf course and was very proud of making two holes-in-one, the first at River Plantation Country Club on April 28, 1984, and the second on May 15, 2012 at Elkins Lake, where he simultaneously "shot his age" with a golf score of 75. When health challenges required Chuck to forgo golf, he kept his mind sharp with brain-building puzzles like Words with Friends, Sodoku, Wordle, and the daily crossword puzzle. Hawaii was a cherished vacation destination which Chuck was able to enjoy multiple times over the course of his life. Kauai was his favorite Hawaiian island, and he visited there five times. Hawaii was such a favorite that he named two of his beloved pet dogs after Hawaiian royalty. And, as an enthusiastic and lifelong coffee drinker, he developed a preference for the distinct flavor profile of the Kona coffee cultivated on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Living as the sole male in a house with 6 females required a sense of humor. During the many family road trips in the wood paneled station wagon, he adopted the CB radio handle "Daymaker." At one time, and much to his daughters' chagrin, the identifier on the family mailbox read "Zoo of 7 Days." He showcased his humor, witticisms, and excellent writing ability in the annual family Christmas newsletter that he authored and coined "The Days of our Lives." He enjoyed driving about town with personalized vehicle vanity plates that read "2 Paux," a reference to PauxPaux, the term of endearment he adopted as a grandfather.
We are all extremely grateful for the abundant prayer, encouragement, and support of the Uplifters Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church in Conroe, Texas and the thoughtful care of Amedisys Hospice.
Chuck's daughters would be remiss if we didn't express our profound and deeply felt sense of thankfulness to Charlotte for her unfailing patience, unwavering compassion, gracious tender care and dedication to our father during his failing health. She bore this weighty responsibility with abundant grace and without complaint. It was not an easy undertaking.
Preceded in death by his parents and Sylvia, Charles is survived by his wife, Charlotte Montgomery Day. He will be mourned by his five daughters and their families: Melanie & husband Tony Kriska, Megan & husband Kevin Dahlstrom, Laurel and husband Stephen Lawhon, Leslie & husband Rex Woods, and Lisa & husband Matt Snyder.
"PauxPaux" was constantly entertained by his thirteen grandchildren: Hailey & husband River Wylie, Hannah & Carter Kriska, Abby & Allie Dahlstrom, Jack & Gracie Lawhon and Gracie's fiancée Harrison Kerr, Caroline, Callie & Cooper Woods, Annabelle & Hunter Handley, and Adeline & Audrey Snyder. It delighted Charles that he had one great grandchild, Mason Kriska, and hearing Mason say "PauxPaux" was a source of great joy.
The family will receive visitors from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Monday, July 28, 2025 at Metcalf Funeral Directors, 1801 East White Oaks Terrace, Conroe. A memorial celebration of Chuck's life will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at First Baptist Church Conroe, 600 North Main.
