Charles Nelson "Trey" Shields, III
03/08/1966 - 01/02/2023
Charles Nelson "Trey" Shields III, a wonderful and loving father, brother, nephew and friend, passed away on Monday, the 2nd of January, 2023, from complications due to his myotonic dystrophy, a horrible and degenerative disease which he endured for the last 25 years of his life. He was 56 years of age.
Trey was born in Houston, Texas to Roseanne Trapolino and Charles N. Shields, Jr. on the 8th of March 1966. He attended Memorial High School then went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.B.A. in both Finance and Real Estate. He later earned his M.B.A. with a concentration in accounting from the University of Houston kick-starting his career in public accounting. He later transferred those skills into the oil and gas industry working his way up in the tax department at a couple of large corporations over the span of many years.
He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, a parishioner of St. Michael Catholic Church and a member of the Texas Exes Houston chapter.
Trey was brilliant, generous and full of life. Prior to becoming more symptomatic in his early 30's, he was athletic and loved all sports. He exceled in racquetball and both water and snow skiing. He enjoyed playing cards and loved playing with his sons and even teaching them to play chess, a game he learned to master over the years. He eagerly looked forward to every fall season as that meant doing one of his favorite things, watching college football, his Texas Longhorns, with friends and family.
Trey is survived by his beloved sons, Charles and Nicholas; his father, Charles N. Shields, Jr. and wife Jo; his stepfather, Rob Johnson; his sister and brother Shanna Linbeck and Robby Johnson; his aunt and uncle, Sandra and Mike Ballases; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family is deeply grateful for Luis Ponce and the last year he spent with Trey taking care of him and constantly by his side. He tried to make Trey more comfortable as best he could and was readily available whenever Shanna, his sister, needed him as she was Trey's true source of support.
The memorial service is to be conducted at ten o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 13th of January, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road in Houston,
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family and share remembrances of Trey during a reception at a venue to be announced during the service.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Trey's name be directed to the Myotonic Dystrophy Clinical Care program under Ericka P. Greene, MD of Houston Methodist, Scurlock Tower, 6560 Fannin St, 8th Floor, Houston, TX 77030.
