Charles Smelcer

Born: May 12, 1945 | Died: February 18, 2025

Charles Smelcer, age 79, of Mercer Lane, Afton, Tennessee passed away peacefully with his daughter and son-in-law by his side, Tuesday afternoon, February 18th, 2025, in Johnson City, Tennessee.

He was born in Greeneville, TN on May 12th, 1945. He was a retired teacher and administrator with Greene County Schools. He was also a former educator with Cedar Creek Learning Center and the Clyde Austin 4-H Center.

Mr. Smelcer was a long-time member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a member of Moose Lodge #692. He was also a former sound technician with the Little Theater of Greeneville.

His family knew him as a very loving, devoted and generous father and husband with a unique sense of humor.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Alison and Charlie Close of Afton, Tennessee, one niece Elizabeth Smelcer Herring of Cary, North Carolina, a nephew and his wife Hudson and Angela Smelcer also of Cary, North Carolina, four great nieces and two great nephews, Hudson and Sydney, Cranz and Elyse, Trey and Mary Thorp, and many, many special cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alice Emma Walker Smelcer, a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Laura Smelcer of Kinston, North Carolina, his parents Frank and Beryl Smelcer of Greeneville, TN, and a nephew, Edward Lee Smelcer, II.

The family will be receiving family and friends at Kiser Rose Hill Funeral Home on Saturday, March 8th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

There will be a short gathering for family and friends on Sunday, March 9th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. with a memorial service following at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Kiser Rose Hill Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

The active pallbearers will include Charlie Close, Russell Lawrence, Wade Crum, Jeff Wilder, Matt Moore, John Wilson, and Alan Smelcer.

Honorary pallbearers include Charles Harrison, Ned Sanders, Jerry Via, Gary Berry, Dr. Al Claiborne and Dr. Ed Claiborne.

Mr. Smelcer was a fierce protector and caregiver of animals. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Greeneville-Greene County Humane Society, any animal rescue, or animal charity of your choosing.
