Charles Swander Obituary

Charles E. "Charlie" Swander

Yorktown - Charles E. "Charlie" Swander, 83, of Yorktown, passed away after a brief illness on December 29, 2017.

He was born in Muncie to Maurice and Beulah (Branson) Swander on October 23, 1934. He was a proud graduate of the Yorktown High School class of 1952, where he played basketball and baseball. Charlie began working for Marsh Supermarkets by unloading railroad cars while in high school and continued in many different positions, eventually retiring as Warehouse Superintendent after forty years of service. In 1954, he married Marilyn Holloway and began their sixty-three year marriage. Together, they had four children, twelve grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Throughout his life, Charlie enjoyed participating in church league softball, Marsh league bowling, Delaware County Old Timer's Basketball Tourney, horseshoe pitching, and the National Senior Games. He was a dedicated participant in the Ball Memorial Hospital Cardiac Rehab Program.

When he retired, Charlie used his warehouse skills as a volunteer board member at Second Harvest Food Bank and as coordinator of the Friends Memorial Church Food Pantry. He also served as a trustee and treasurer for Friends Memorial Church, where he was a member for over sixty years.

In recent years, Charlie enjoyed sharing and planning regular meals with Marsh retirees and members of his graduating class.

Charlie is survived by his wife Marilyn (Holloway) Swander; his sister, Marilyn (Bill) Naylor; his brother-in-law, Bud Holloway; and his sister-in-law, Carolyn Swander. He is also survived by his children, Dave Swander (Rebecca); Jeff Swander (Pam); Barbara Miller (Jerry); and Jan Swander.

His grandchildren include Katie (Andy) Gilmore; Lisa (Eric) Sarjeant; Doug Swander; Anna Swander; Cassie Swander; Laura (Art) Templin; Kevin (Taryn) Swander; Sally (Tim) Bill; Ted Shideler; John Shideler; Kyle Miller; and Adam Miller.

Charlie's great-grandchildren include Colin and Emily Gilmore; Calvin and Daphne Sarjeant; Leah, John and Evan Templin; and Chloe Miller.

Charlie is also survived by several nieces and a nephew: Brad (Heather) Holloway; Lori (Tim) Shaw; Tama Fulton; Brenda (Ron) Shiner; and Krista (John) Lynch.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Beulah Swander and younger brother, Bob Swander.
