CHESTER DeVORE Obituary

DeVORE, CHESTER S. October 3, 1918 to January 7, 2011 Surrounded by his family, Chester S. DeVore passed peacefully after 92 years of life. He was a respected patriarch, a decorated Marine Corps veteran, and an accomplished educator and coach who always remained dedicated to his country, his community and his family. Born in Redlands, California, Chet was the son of Walter and Jessie DeVore. He graduated from Chaffey High School in 1937 and Chaffey Junior College in 1939, lettering in football, basketball and baseball. He then enrolled at San Diego State College where he lettered in basketball and was a member of the 1940-1941 NAIA National Championship Men's Basketball Team. After receiving his B.A. in 1942, Chet served his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in World War II. Fighting alongside members of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, he saw action in the Pacific Theater of war during the campaigns of Bouganville, Emirau, Guam and Okinawa. Chet was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his gallantry and left the Marine Corps having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Upon returning from the war, Chet began a rewarding career in education. He found passion in teaching and coaching youth, and worked at Chula Vista High School from 1947-1955 as a teacher, coach, counselor and vice principal, and as principal from 1956-1961. Chet is one of the most successful high school football coaches in San Diego County history, guiding Chula Vista High to a 40-3 win-loss record over his last four seasons from 1951-1955. In 1962, he became the founding President/Superintendent of Southwestern College where he supervised the formation of a new college, including the development of academic programs, campus planning and construction. At the time of his retirement in 1981, the stadium at Southwestern College was named in his honor. Active in the community, Chet was a Charter member of the Chula Vista Presbyterian Church and a member of the Chula Vista Kiwanis Club for over 35 years. He was inducted into the Halls of Fame for Chula Vista High School, California Community College Association and Chaffey Junior College. Chet chaired the San Diego State University Veteran Memorial Committee that constructed a campus monument in memory of former Aztecs killed in service. He also was on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Chapter of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame and was the founding Commissioner of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. We will remember Chet DeVore for his integrity, leadership, dedication and his sense of humor. His legacy has been etched in his commitment to his country and his community and can be found in every student that he taught, every teacher he mentored and every athlete he has coached. But more importantly, his legacy will always be found in the love and the strength of the family that he leaves behind. Chet is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Helen, and their four children, twins Janet (Skip) Arnold and John (Sheila) DeVore, son James (Sori) DeVore, daughter Ann (Frank) Pugh, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother William DeVore. Services will be held at the Chula Vista Presbyterian Church, 940 Hilltop Drive in Chula Vista at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 10th. Additionally, there will be a visitation at Glen Abbey Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3838 Bonita Road in Bonita on Sunday, January 9th, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chester S. DeVore Student Scholarship Fund at Southwestern College, 900 Otay Lakes Road, CA 91910.

Chet Devore was the finest man I ever had the privilege. He was our coach in 54-55 and 55-56 season. I 56 he was also
principal. At the beginning of the 55-56 season he got prescription goggles for me, which prompted team mates to refer to him as "Cliff's dad".
His great coaching and leadership brought us the SCIF championship in54-55, which prompted the SCIF to put us in the large school division with schools three times our size. We lost the San Diego county championship game to the San Diego High School juggernaut.

Coach Devore was a great inspiration to the class of 1954, He, in turn loved our class with all the c.i.f. champion teams that year. a great leader, as he set an expample by trying to teach us how to pole vault,
and would set the bar way up and then
jump with all his clothes on, never
missing. He attended our 30th class
reunion and visited with all of us.
He made us feel special with his
personal support. Bruce Seratti

I was a student in Mr. DeVore's Family Living Class in 1954 and remember him as teaching a class that I actually did enjoy and learn something practical that I could use in my life. He was such a gentleman. I have never heard an unkind word about him and everybody in our class remembers him as a role model to live up to. He touched so many lives in a positive way and it was my priliege to have had him as a teacher. You are a lucky family to have had him as your husband, father and grandfather. God Bless you.

My sincere condolensces to the DeVore family. After graduating from SWC in 1966, Mr. DeVore hired me as an employee. One of my duties was relieving the switchboard operator during lunch time and I saw Mr. DeVore and his secretary Mrs. Wear in action. They were a great team! Mr. DeVore also was a referee for a semi-professional football league where my ex-husband played. Mr. DeVore certainly had a full, wonderful life--my sympathy to his family. He will certainly be missed by all!!!

My thoughts and prayers are with the DeVore family, especially with John who I know will miss his Dad greatly. Mr. DeVore was president of Southwestern College when I attended; he did a great job getting the new campus operating. It was my pleasure to work with John, and I know he followed his father's tradition of integrity and hard work.

I will always remember Mr. DeVore for the kind, warm-hearted, caring man that he was. He greeted me by my name and always seemed to know when my kids were sick and asked how they were. I thoroughly enjoyed working for and with him at SWC for many years. I will never forget him.

It is an honor to be able to write this entry into Mr. Devore's guest book. I was privileged to work as the switchboard operator at the new Southwestern College campus and my desk was right outside Mr. Devore's office. He had such a quiet elegance in the way he handled everyday matters at the college and often they were daunting, but sometimes very funny too. We started with a few buildings and bare grounds and through his diligence, and that of many others from the very beginning, the college is what it is today. Jean Wear and I worked together in the lobby outside his office and believe me I saw what a powerful team they were. I will never forget Mr. Devore and working with him. He was one of the best bosses I ever worked with. God speed Mr. Devore.

Some of my favorite memories of CVHS from 1953 - 1955 are of Chet DeVore. He was a wonderful teacher, tolerant, kind and informative. Most of my class I'm sure will remember the pink flamingo we gave him for his front yard as a gift to our own "bird legs". His sense of humor was ledgendary!
God Bless and my sympathy to all of his family.

As a student journalist at the new SW College, when still at CVHS, I had the pleasure of some association with Chester Devore: He was always a gentleman of high standards; a caring man; and I am sorry to hear of his passing, but know that he has been welcomed into the Eternal Kingdom.
