Christina Bauer Obituary

Christina Fox Bauer passed away peacefully on August 4, 2024 with her sons by her side following a brief and sudden illness. She was vacationing with her family and friends in her beloved Maine woods at the time of her death.

Born on October 22, 1948 in Toledo, Ohio, Christina was a graduate of Whitmer High School in 1966 and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Betta Kappa from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1970 where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She received a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from Indiana University in 1974.

As a dedicated, non-stop mother, Christina was a volunteer at her children's schools, at the Montgomery County Public Library, and the National Gallery of Art for over twenty years. She joined the workforce in 1995 at Computer Sciences Corporation, working as a librarian on the Education Resources Information Center Program until 2013.

She then became an expert professional tour guide in Washington, DC, a job she cherished and was passionate about until her death. A member of the Board of Directors of the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, DC, Christina led hundreds of tours across the city, constantly learning more herself so that she could teach others about our nation's rich history.

When not working, Christina traveled extensively to Europe where she loved being immersed in other cultures. She was also a proud and dedicated grandmother who loved nothing more than to spend time with her five littles ones. They will miss her tremendously.

Christina Fox Bauer is survived by her sons, Alan H. Rowsome, his wife Kimberly (Palmer), and their sons Richard, Rory and Remy of Arlington, Virginia and Robert B. Rowsome, his wife Allison (Horkan), and their daughters Olivia and Sadie of Harwood, Maryland. She also is survived by her brothers David O. Bauer (Cindy Reynolds) of Bowling Green, Ohio and Timothy W. Bauer (Pamela) of Toledo, Ohio, as well as one niece, four nephews and many cousins.

A celebration of Christina's life will be held at 11 a.m. on August 24 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, MD, a congregation she was actively a part of for nearly 50 years. A live stream of the service will be available at www.goserve.net/live.

Though its more than 40 years since we've been neighbors with Chris, we will never forget her. We saw her twice two weeks before she passed and miss her greatly. Anne and Mike Davis

Chris was my close friend for 45 years. We met in the neighborhood when her son Rob and my son Patrick were newborns. Our children grew up together running back and forth between our houses. She was a good friend and good fun. We always found something to laugh about when we were together, except for those times when we supported each other through the darker moments of life. When I lost my son Patrick she was a great comfort, knowing just the right way to be there for me. She joined many of my family gatherings when I had visitors from England and Belgium and they all enjoyed her company. In 2015 we met up in Belgium and attended my aunt and uncle's 60th wedding anniversary celebration. She was so interested in all the traditions and became beloved by my Belgian family. I will miss her dreadfully. When I heard the news of her passing the first thing I thought of was a quotation from Middlemarch. I know Chris is somewhere rolling her eyes and laughing that I would inevitably come up with a literary quote, but it is apt. At the very end of the novel George Eliot reflects on the life of her heroine Dorothea: "the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive, for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life.." Rest in Peace my dear friend.
Here is a favorite photo of us together at one of those family gatherings at my house in 2012, by chance wearing favorite coordinating colors.

Christina was a wonderful Bauer cousin for me, but a friend as well. We were born only months apart, and shared countless happy memories of family gatherings with our parents, our colorful aunts and uncles, our other cousins . . . As a devout Lutheran, Chris appreciated and encouraged my vocation as a Catholic missionary priest on the faculty at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan . . . I'll always treasure her affection, her beautifully curious mind, her laugh, and her love for life and family . . . R.I.P, dear one.
