David Duke Obituary

Dr. David Allen "Dave" Duke died peacefully Monday, October 9, 2017 in Salt Lake City, UT at the age of 81.

David was born November 26, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Otto Duke and Beatrice Taylor. He was the youngest of Otto & Bea's six children. Dave attended Bryant Junior High then Salt Lake East High before enrolling at the University of Utah in 1953. Dave married his high school sweetheart, Hanne Jensen, in 1955 in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple. He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1957, a Master of Science in Geo-Ceramics in 1959, and a PhD in Ceramics in 1962. Upon graduation, he accepted a position at Corning Glass Works as a research scientist, moving his family to Corning, NY. During his career he was awarded 10 patents, including patents for Corelle dinnerware. Dave was recognized as a brilliant researcher and talented manager. Corning sent Dave to the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Development program in 1968. Upon his return from Harvard, Dave was given the opportunity to grow and run several of Corning's businesses, including science products, Radomes, catalytic converter substrates and telecommunications/optical waveguides. Dave accepted the National Medal of Technology from the President of the United States on behalf of Corning Incorporated. He was presented the Earle B. Barnes Award in Chemical Research Management by the American Chemical Society, was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering and was a member of the University of Utah College of Engineering's Engineering National Advisory Committee. He retired from Corning in 1996 as Vice-Chairman of the Board and Chief Technology Officer.

Dave was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the LDS Church throughout his life including as a Branch President of the Elmira, NY Branch, Bishop of the Elmira, NY Ward and President of the South Africa, Durban Mission from 1998-2001.

Dave was known for his love of others, making life-long friendships with nearly everyone he met. Dave served tirelessly to help others, to mentor colleagues at work, to counsel families, and to encourage youth to achieve personal & professional success through education, goal setting and life planning.

Dave was active & athletic throughout his life. He developed a love of golf as a youth working as a caddy and grounds keeper at the Salt Lake Country Club. While at Corning, he played on numerous intramural and city league teams including basketball, fast-pitch softball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, horseshoes and bowling. Dave coached many youth sports teams. He loved to fish and golf to the very end, including the opportunity to play at Augusta National.

Dave and Hanne traveled extensively in their retirement years. The traveling they enjoyed the most was visiting their children and grandchildren.

Dave and Hanne are the proud parents of four children: Katherine (Robert) Shumway, Michael, Deborah (Gregg) Winn and John (Cessily) Duke. Dave is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hanne, his four children, his brother James Duke, his 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Beatrice, his siblings, Keith Duke, Melvin Duke, Barbara Haws-Rushton, Beatrice Bullen and his grandson, Blake Shumway.

I had the great pleasure of knowing Dr. Duke for most of my life. As a member of the same church, I always knew him as Brother Duke. He is someone that is the picture of an impressive individual; but more than that, he is, to me, one of the pictures of a dedicated husband and father and a disciple of Jesus Christ. He has an aspect of integrity that is so innate in his character that he is someone that you immediately trust.
His intelligence, experience, values and enthusiasm are evident in everything he does. He created a lasting legacy in his family, which is, above all, his greatest accomplishment on this earth.

Our family enjoyed our association with Dave and Hanne in NY and briefly in Salt Lake City. He was kind, helpful, and a welcome visit in our home. Hanne, I wish you the best in the coming months and years as you continue on without your companion. He will watch over you.

Hanne and Dave were our neighbors for many years on Theresa Drive. I remember one Fall when I was laid-up with an injury, Dave and son John came over and raked up the leaves in our yard. It was the only time I had a VP rake leaves for me. And when Mary was recovering from surgery, Hanne brought over hot delicious meals for us.

We have lost a great man. Such a good heart. My mother, Fern, enjoyed her short acquaintance with him at the Abbington.

We send our love to you, Hanne, and your children. We were so sorry to have missed the service. We heard it was wonderful... "one that made you want to live a better life, like he did."

It has been about 40 years since I worked in the Optical waveguides group as an International Marketing specialist for Chuck Lucy. It was an exciting time Chuck handled the international relations for Dr Duke. The relations with Siemens the New products all were being born. It took an amazing man to play shepard to that group of people.

David Duke was a wonderful person, smart but still a humble person.I traveled with him to the opening of our France's new headquarters and we stayed in the same hotel and walked around browsing French deserts before the official functions next day.
He was a great scientist and leader.

I had the good fortune of working for Dave Duke at Corning -- although several levels below him. He was extremely smart and extremely hard working. He would listen to my news of our R&D results -- which were often not the good results he wanted. He would also listen to my opinions of what the problem was -- even if though sometimes they were not in sync with what our goals were. But the greatest thing I can say about him is that you could trust him completely. He was one of the most honest men I have ever known.

Dr. Duke was one on the finest, most ethical and decent executives at Corning. He was straight laced, honest and truly cared about the Company and all of its employees, regardless of position. He was a true gentleman, a great example to our other leaders; and, Corning is a significantly better company as a result. Thank you for all you did for us. RIP.

Knew Dave well when he was at Corning. We worked together and was my boss when he served as CTO. I don't think I ever had the pleasure of working with a more honest and truly genuine gentleman. Indeed the word "gentleman" could not be more apt.
My sincere sympathy is offered to his wonderful family
