Dilip Chowdhury Obituary

Dilip Kumar
Chowdhury
1938-2017
In Cherished and Loving Memory
Dilip Kumar Chowdhury
That man is a success, who leaves the world better than he found it; who has never lacked appreciation of the earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. - Anonymous
It is with great sadness we announce that the world lost one of its best husbands, fathers, and role models with the passing of Dilip K. Chowdhury in Sugar Land, Texas on March 21, 2017 at 5:17pm.
Dilip was born in Chittagong, British India to Upendralal Dey Chowdhury and Snehalata Chowdhury. He was the eldest child and had 2 younger brothers and 4 younger sisters. He also had 2 older half-brothers. His father passed away when he was sixteen and he became a father figure for his brothers and sisters. In spite of the difficult circumstances, through hard work and dedication and the support of his half-brothers, he earned his degree in Chemical Engineering from the East Pakistan (Bangladesh) University of Engineering and Technology. Dilip met the love of his life, his wife, Dipti while visiting relatives in Calcutta in 1964. He pursued her to India and they married in 1965.
He was a respected and well-liked engineer and helped design and build many of the nuclear power plants, oil refineries, and early cell phone towers that allow the world to function today. In 1975, his brilliance allowed him to come to America (NY, NY), a country he gained an admiration for as he watched its soldiers fight in WWII on his ancestral lands. During those dark times, he developed a love for flying (as an Air Scout) and later in life, became a recreational pilot.
After immigrating, he always taught his children that India and America had good and bad aspects to them and to take only the good from both. After living in the cold weather of NY, NY, Green Bay, WI and Louisville, KY, he finally found a city that had the warmth (both weather and people) he and his wife had grown accustomed to in India and moved to Houston in 1978.
He liked activities such as Boy Scouts with his sons, flying planes, model rocketry, fishing, picnics, and camping. He loved to read and knew more about South Asian politics than most Asians. He was an extremely adventurous person and explored the world with his family. Later in life, he enjoyed gardening, biking, visiting temples, watching his wife participate in musical concerts, exotic group travel, going on long walks with his four-legged-friends (Buddy, Chewie and Alamo) and, most importantly, playing with his granddaughters.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Dipti, his daughter Sumita, sons Indranil and Debnil, his son-in-law Shubha Ghosh, daughter-in-law Santana, and two granddaughters, Deepanjali and Shoumili, who were his pride and joy.
