Donald Haskins Obituary

Donald Brown Haskins
WINGATE -- Dr. Haskins, emeritus professor of Law at Wingate University and son of the late C. B. and Beadie Haskins of Greensboro, died on Saturday, May 28, in Union Regional Medical Center in Monroe. He was born on June 25, 1934 in Guilford County, and was a graduate of Guilford College and Wake Forest University School of Law, and a member of the North Carolina Bar. He served in the North Carolina National Guard and advanced to the rank of Sergeant.
Dr. Haskins began his 45 year tenure at Wingate Junior College/Wingate College/Wingate University in the fall of 1960. He began his career as professor of Business and Economics, and through the years created one of the most popular courses in the curriculum, Business Law 101, which he taught continuously until 2004. In addition to his teaching, Dr. Haskins became the Dean of Men, then Dean of Students, Vice-President for Student Affairs, and before administrative retirement, he was named Senior Vice-President for Student Development. These titles and his meaningful relationships with countless students led to his affectionate title of 'Dean-O'. For many years, one of the highlights of graduation was 'Dean-O' singing his rendition of 'Precious Memories' at the rehearsal.
Beyond his official responsibilities as teacher and administrator, Dr. Haskins left his mark on the total campus community with his enthusiastic and generous support of many facets of the university. Always an avid Bulldog fan, he established an award in memory of his parents to honor the highest academic achievement of scholar athletes. He was a lifetime member of the President's Council, the Bulldog Club, and the Friends of the Library. He gave one of the annual Founder's Day Addresses and was the honoree for a Homecoming Roast. In recognition and appreciation of his contributions, Dr. Haskins was made an Honorary Alumnus of Wingate University, and presented with the Order of the Seal for his many years of service. An area of the Ethel K. Smith Library is designated the Haskins Reading Room; the street that circles the baseball field is Haskins Drive; and the Jefferson Residential Complex includes Haskins Hall.
For many years, Dr. Haskins retained his membership in the Friendly Avenue Baptist Church in Greensboro, frequently returning to teach the Men's Bible Class during his father's lifetime. In recent years, he became a member of the Wingate Baptist Church.
Dr. Haskins is survived by a brother, Harold Haskins of Greensboro; a nephew, Butch Haskins of Greensboro; and a niece, Donna Dancausse of Willow Springs, NC. He is remembered by countless students who have benefited from his spiritual and financial support throughout the years.
Memorial services will be on Wednesday, June 1, at 10:30 AM in Hanna McGee Auditorium, Batte Center on the Wingate University Campus. Burial will be at 3:30 PM at Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro.
Memorials may be made to the Donald B. Haskins Scholarship Fund at Wingate University Development Office, Wingate, NC 28174.

Dean Haskins was one of a Kind. I remember his admonishing "If you

don't do well on your business law

exam.... it will be sad singing and

slow driving!!" Indeed it is now.

Precious memories, unseen angels

Sent from somewhere to my soul

How they linger, ever near me

And the sacred past unfold

Precious memories, how they linger

How they ever flood my soul

In the stillness of the midnight

Precious sacred scenes unfold

Like many, I was both shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Dean Haskins. Since I met him in 1967, he seemed always larger than life, a part of the foundation of the entire campus at Wingate. Mr. Haskins gave his life to Wingate and its students and friends. Sadly, we will not see the likes of him any time soon. Thankfully, he was here 70 years, and shared 45 wonderful years wtih us at Wingate.

When I entered Wingate in 1968, I felt that The Dean took a special interest in me. But it was not just me, for he took a special interest in almost everyone. There are those people who touch your life and have a profound impact. For me, Dean Haskins had a profound impact, and I along with countless others, are far better citizens of society today because of The Dean. My condolences to his family and all who feel this loss. Thanks Dean!

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dean Haskins. I am a 1967 graduate of Wingate. I often saw Dean Haskins on campus, and he always had a smile and kind word for all. What wonderful people influenced my life at Wingate!

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the Haskins family. I am a 1982 graduate of Wingate. I was a dorm counselor for 3 years. One of my most treasured memories of Wingate was all of the ball games we attended with the Dean and the late night runs to the truck stop to get a burger.

The Dean will truly be missed at Wingate.

Dr. Don Haskins is truly one of the great educators and administrators in the history of Wingate Junior College/Wingate College/ Wingate University.

I started teaching at Wingate in 1959; Dr. Haskins came in 1960. For a short period of time we both lived in the home of Mrs. Mary Griffin across the street from the Ethel K. Smith Library. I moved from Wingate to Gardner-Webb College/Gardner-Webb University in 1967, but I continued to see Dr. Haskins when I visited Wingate through the years.

Dr. Haskins' friendliness and helpfulness to so many will be long remembered.

Every university has some people who are legends. Dr. Haskins is one of these special people.

I am grateful that he has been my friend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bob Morgan, Professor Emeritus of French and Mathematics, Gardner-Webb University

To say that Dean Haskins will be missed is truly an understatement.

Deano was such a "big" personality and special person. It's hard to imagine that he's no longer around. He will be greatly missed, but Wingate and all those he came in contact with are better for his having been here. Class of 1990

My wife and I were saddened to hear of Dean Haskins' passing. As a dorm counselor and vice-president of the student body from the class of '65, I was the recipient of his "words of wisdom" many times. I think this quote hanging in our house best describes him. "Some people come into our lives and quietly go; others stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same."

So sorry to hear about Dean Haskins' passing.

I was his Student Assistant during my 2nd year at Wingate -- 1970-'71 school year --and he was such a great person to 'work for'. (you can't call it work --when you have that much fun --learning and laughing). I hate I wasn't able to get back down to visit him --but we did communicate by mail some.

He was truly one in a million and

he'll be missed by all who knew him . But - his legacy will live forever !!!

RIP -Dean Haskins.

As a student and House Counselor at Thayer House in 1963, I became acquainted with Dean Haskins, our Dean of Men. Knowing what he has contributed to Wingate over the years, he will be truly missed. I for one, am a better person for having known him.
