Doris Goodlett Obituary

Doris Wright Goodlett

Greenville

This lovely, cherished lady was born in 1920, the daughter of the late Harold and Bessie Wright. Independent to the end, she passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, July 8th. Doris grew up in Greenville, attended Greenville High School, and graduated magna cum laude from Furman University in 1941.

Doris was active in theater at Furman, and then performed in a variety of productions at the Greenville Little Theater. She was a lifelong member of Greenville First Baptist Church, where she served as a Deacon. She also served as a volunteer at St. Francis Hospital for many years, and was a member of the YWCA Board of Directors. Professionally, Doris was head of the Reading Department at Greenville Technical College until her retirement.

Doris is survived by her four children: Gail Goodlett McDaniel (Allen) of Cartersville, GA; William Ward Goodlett, Jr. (Catherine) and Stella Goodlett Bobotis (Harry), both of Greenville, SC; and Harold Gregory Goodlett of Charlotte, NC. She will be greatly missed by seven grandchildren: Kevin McDaniel, Kelly McDaniel, Teresa Goodlett Strait (Will), William Ward Goodlett, III, George Harry (G.H.) Bobotis, Alexander Blair Bobotis, and Paige Wright Goodlett; three great-grandchildren: Lauren McDaniel, Sidney and Jude Strait.

Doris was an avid bridge player, an all-around sports fan, and a theatre enthusiast. She was bright, witty, and the life of the party. A retired teacher, she never lost her passion for knowledge. Doris' most amazing attributes were found in her faith, her devotion to her family, and her lovely and caring spirit. This spirit was experienced equally by all who met her, and she will forever inspire those who knew and loved her.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, July 14th at 11:30 am in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Greenville, SC, where the family will receive friends from 10:15 - 11:15. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greenville Little Theatre, 444 College Street, Greenville, SC 29601. The family is at the home of Harry and Stella Bobotis. Stella and Harry & family, please accept my condolences in the loss of your Mom. I'm not able to get by the church. She was an amazing lady. The last time I saw her was 7-10 years ago when I took Mama & Daddy to the Greenville High School reunion luncheons she organized at the Hilton! May God give you strength and your memories of her fill you with love and peace. Love, Virginia "Gee" Mann Camarda

Dear Goodlett Family,
I so want you all to know how much your mother meant to me and my family over the years. We all grew up on the same block on Long View Terrace and in 1953 when my father was killed your family was so precious and supportive to us. Those times are never forgotten. Gail, I so remember you and Bob M. playing in the sand box and how cute you were.
I am sorry I cannot attend your mothers memorial service as I am out of town today. Love and prayers to each of you and would love to see you some time.
Harry I also knew your mother well, from Dr. B's office years back. She was so precious to me. I was his nurse.

Mrs. Goodlett was my Sunday School teacher at First Baptist when I was in the 8th grade. She taught us the Bible and how to apply it to our lives in everyday life. It made a GREAT difference in my life! My sincere sympathy to her family to her family. - Debbie Barton Felts

Stella and the other children: Your Mother was one of the faithful volunteers in the First Baptist After-School Program in the Viola neighborhood from 1993-2000. She was so much fun - the children just loved her because she made homework fun! And I think she also taught them a little line-dancing when they needed to use up some energy! She became very special to me. She always had a happy face and cheerful manner, no matter what the situation. I'll miss her!
