Edward Kilpatrick Obituary

ONEONTA >> Edward Clifford Kilpatrick, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.
Ed was born on Feb. 22, 1924 in Oneonta, a son of the late Ira and Marian (Clark) Kilpatrick. On July 1, 1961, Ed married Barbara J. Duncan in Sherrill, N.Y. Ed and Barb celebrated 41 years of marriage until Barb's passing in 2003.
He was predeceased by his brother, Karl C. Kilpatrick, and several cousins.
Throughout his life, Ed's passion was sports. Whether he was participating or watching from the sidelines, Ed enjoyed being a part of the action. He attended Oneonta schools, graduating from Oneonta High School in 1942. Following graduation, Ed enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. Upon his return from military service Ed attended Ithaca College, where he graduated in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree. He then went on to Springfield College in Massachusetts where he received his master's degree in education.
Ed began his teaching career in South New Berlin, where he taught physical education and also coached basketball. After teaching there for just one year, he went on to teach and coach at both Otego and Oneonta High Schools, before accepting a position in Canastota Central School, moving there in 1955. While at Canastota Ed taught and coached for over 15 years and at one point served as the school's athletic director. He retired in 1979. Ed moved back to Oneonta in 2004.
Ed enjoyed golfing in his spare time, and was a member of the Kanon Valley Country Club. He also devoted some of his time to his communities, being a former member of the Canastota Lions Club, and an active member of the Oneida YMCA. He is also a former member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Fayetteville, N.Y. and a current member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.
Friends may call from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta at which time his family will be receiving guests. A memorial service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

I was fortunate enough to have been on the first team he coached in Canastota. He taught us a lot yet let us be ourselves. He was fun to play for and I will always remember him. His love of the game was unbelievable. Rest in peace Ed and tell Barb we said hi. Don Masucci

A few years ago on teacher appreciation day, I called Mr. Kilpatrick to thank him for helping me make my decision to become a "gym teacher" as early as 2nd grade at South Side School....back in the 50's!
I'm so glad he remembered me and so
glad I made that call.I've been teaching Physical Education for the past 29 years and still loving it!!!
Thanks Mr. Kilpatrick...Rest in Peace.

Ed Kilpatrick was one of the finest men I have ever called friend. He and Barb were very close friends of my wife and Ifor many years. We competed against each other for many years and then coached together for four years. He was very sharp and had a brilliant basketball mind. Elna and I will miss him very much - he was the best!!!!!!!!!!

Basketball, he loved the game, Ed was not only a Basketball junkie, but he and Barb were friends of my mom and dad.He was also complicated and very shy ( his words )the shy part.RIP Grant White

Coach Ed was my basketball coach at Canastota High School. With a small rooster , we were able to compete successfully in the Tri-Valley League.

Coach Ed instilled in our team respect for one another as well as team concept of working together in a cooperative manner. He made us believe in ourselves.
Thanks coach for all that you did for our school and community. Our prayers go out to his family.

I am sorry to see the passing of Ed and I offer my deepest condolences. I knew Ed for only a little over a year and i enjoyed our times together, whether going out for coffer and a whopper junior at Burger King, which he enjoyed greatly, or to get a haircut. I will surely miss him. Again I offer my deepest and heart felt condolences at your lost.

Sorry to hear about Coach , he was passionate about coaching and teaching. I was on his teams when he and Barb met and also at her passing in 2003. He taught lessons that still are with me today. I was fortunate to see him about 1 1/2 years ago. Thanks for helping mold me into I am today.
