Edward J. Martin, 74
WESTBROOK - Edward J. Martin, 74, of Westbrook, passed away at his home on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, after a long battle with COPD.
He was the husband of the late Kathryn (Davis) Martin, who died Dec. 5, 2006.
He was born March 17, 1942, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of the late James and Elizabeth (Green) Martin. He grew up in South Portland, attending local area schools, and graduated from South Portland High School. He joined the Navy in 1963 and served for four years.
Edward was a delivery driver for Oakhurst, where he met his wife, and later for Lepage Bakeries until retiring due to health reasons.
He enjoyed everything that had to do with trains, from models to the real thing, including being a member of Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad. He would spend every Sunday afternoon down at the Narrow Gauge, punching tickets on the train rides, until his health declined.
He was a long-time member of Central Square Baptist Church in Portland. He had a strong bond with his two cats, Rusty and Oreo. During baseball or football seasons, the Red Sox game or the Patriots game always would be on the television.
He is survived by his daughter, Christine M. Heavel; her husband, Ernest "Lee;" and his grandson, Keith Heavel; all of Westbrook.
The family would like to send out a very special thank you to all the VNA workers who helped them over the past months and especially the last few weeks. Ed really enjoyed all the visits, and they made this very difficult time a little easier with all the support from the VNA.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the Deering Center Community Church, 4 Brentwood St., Portland.
