EDWARD STEINBERG Obituary

STEINBERG--Dr. Edward L.

The Yeshiva University family mourns the passing, in Palm Beach, Florida, of our longtime enthusiastic supporter, Dr. Edward L. Steinberg, z"l, who, together with his beloved wife Judith, is a Benefactor of Yeshiva University. He was the former Vice President of Slim Fast Foods Company and was an avid supporter of the S. Daniel Abraham Israel Program named for his cherished brother-in-law, which has enabled thousands of YU students to visit Israel and participate in our University's programs there. Dr. Steinberg was an optometrist by profession but a warm, visionary leader of our people whose concern for the wellbeing of others was paramount. Heartfelt condolences are extended to his beloved wife, Judith Steinberg and their daughters and their respective spouses Debbie (and Henry) Shimansky, Sherri (and Rabbi Basil) Herring and Marilyn (and Eliot) Lauer all of whom are active alumni of Yeshiva University, and to their nine grandchildren and thirty-three greatgrandchildren. May they and all who are privileged to have known Dr. Steinberg find comfort among those who mourn for Zion and Jerusalem. Yeshiva University Richard M. Joel, President Norman Lamm, President Emeritus

Dr. Steinberg was truly the best person you could ever meet. I was setting up an appointment with him in Palm Beach and he said he couldn't meet that day because he had a meeting with the Pope , I laughed sure enough when I met with Dr. Steinberg he showed me pictures with him and the Pope. He also had a real knack for bringing people together . I will always remember him!

Dear Judy, Debbie, Marilyn, Sheri,
I was so saddened to hear of your loss of your wonderful husband and father. I enjoyed working with him during my years with Keren Or, and I learned a great deal from him about compassion, humility and generosity. He had a heart of gold, a wonderful and warm nature, and was untiring in his support of the children of Keren Or. May his memory be for a blessing and may you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Dear Judy, Debbie, Sherri, Marilyn and family.
Sue and I send our sincere condolences to the family. We are so sorry for your loss.
Eddie was special to so many of us. We are one of the many beneficiaries of Eddie's interest and caring. The beginning of any conversation with Ed was always his queries about the family and our well-being. Ed will always have a special place in our heart.
During the past 20 months of my battle with cancer, Ed's blessings were special and helped me to cope with this battle. The last conversation we had was last week. He will continue to motivate me and will we will be mindful of his presence every day of our lives and our families.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Steinberg family.

Dear Debbie, Henry, Daniel, David, Judy, and family.

I have been deeply touched by Dr. Steinberg. He led by example, and for me, he was a mentor for humility, kindness, and good cheer. There are other things he taught me.

I learned how to lean in and listen deeply when speaking to someone on a topic they are passionate about. He did that with me, and I am grateful for it. To be heard is a blessing, and to be blessed by Dr. Steinberg is the highest form.

I will miss him.

I will miss his point-of-view, always well researched and articulate. I will miss seeing him on a bright Shabbos morning when I turn my eyes to the left of the sanctuary and see him savoring Shabbat and communing so peacefully with G-d. Davening with Dr. Steinberg elevated me spiritually.

You, the family are fortunate to have the legacy of your patriarch's love and devotion. Daniel, how his eyes lit up when he talked of you. David, how proud he was when you entered the room. Debbie, how comforted he was to have your help. Henry, how the two of you shared the gift of music. Judy, how right it was that you, his love, stood by his side.

I knew him in his later years.

Yet, Ed Steinberg was a man I knew for a lifetime. There are certain special people who walk this Earth with purpose. Ed's purpose was clear. Family. Torah. Chesed. In all of my sixty years, I knew Dr. Steinberg. I just hadn't met him until eight years ago. I am so glad I did.
Love, Susan Diamond

Dr. Steinberg was my eye doctor in Long Beach, NY when I was a little pisher. He had all these wacky fringe medical ideas, and my mom loved him. I was his patient and test subject.

He had me sit in his dark examining room and flash pictures too quickly so that I could not see them and tell Dr. Steinberg about it. The theory was that I would grow neurologically and not need glasses if I could learn to see faster and harder. Or something like that. I never shed my glasses habit.

Decades later I was a student in Ted Coon's lab at NYU, and I got a job testing PPA on rats. I designed, built and tested automated titration equipment to find the minimum PPA to get rats to stimulus bound eating with and without PPA. Poor rats. I once overdosed the rats 10x the intended dosage. Their eyes watered, and they did not look so happy, but they did not die until we killed them. My mentor Ted Coons and other colleagues worked on preparing proof that PPA was safe and effective for a big FDA hearing, despite the claim that it killed someone. PPA got a bad rep and Ed moved on to formulate PPA free whey based Slim Fast and made a fortune. That launched the weight loss replacement food industry.

Even more later in life, I joined the BACH temple in Long Beach during the Hurricane Sandy. Edward Steinberg's name was everywhere in the temple and the grounds. I felt closer to him and his family at Edwards Boulevard (I know, different Edward) at services and in the spacious yard and basketball court he paid for at the temple. I never met his daughters but was proud to have worked for him through my Mentor and now friend Professor Coons.

Mrs. Steinberg, Debbie, Marilyn, Sherri, and Family,

I send you my love. Meeting and working with Dr. Steinberg has been one of the best parts of my work with Keren Or. I truly feel lucky to have met him- he was an incredible leader to our organization and an amazing mentor to me. May his memory be for a blessing and may you be comforted among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
