Edward F. Sweet Ph.D.

SWEET, EDWARD F., PH.D.
of Cumberland Street, Providence passed away peacefully at home on February 4, 2021 at age 93. He was the husband of the late Mary Jane (Gallagher) Sweet. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Harry M. and Theresa (Holden) Sweet.
Dr. Sweet was an Associate Professor of History at Providence College for 40 years. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, earning the rank of Sergeant. He was a practicing Catholic whose life was structured around the liturgy of the Church. With his wife, he attended daily Mass in addition to numerous private devotions.
He was the proud father of Elizabeth A. Gizzarelli and her husband Ronald J., Margaret M. Cousineau and her husband Mark, Rev. Fr. Daniel J. Sweet, Matthew W. Sweet, John E. Ladouceur and his wife Lori C., the late Edward, and his 16 grandchildren. He was also the brother of Harry Sweet and his wife Marguerite Ledux, and the late William Sweet, Richard Sweet, Theresa Toomey and David Sweet.
Visitation will be held Friday from 10:00 -11:00 AM in St. Edward Church, 997 Branch Avenue, Providence followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edward's memory to St. Pius V School 49 Elmhurst Avenue, Providence RI 02908.
