Fred Pugh Obituary

Fred A. Pugh January 16, 1943 - November 9, 2009 SALEM - Born in Salem, Oregon on January 16, 1943 to Vera and Arlo Pugh, Fred grew up and attended school in Lake Labish. He went on to attend North Salem High School so that he could fulfill his dream of playing football. Due to his lightning speed and stature, he soon became known as "Cannonball." He also enjoyed drag racing. He graduated in 1961, and attended Clark College and O.S.U. In 1965 he began farming his own land in the Labish area, and married one of his high school girlfriends, Ginger Conner. They had three children, and parted ways in 1978 and soon after, he met the love of his life, Diann Henry and married in 1981. He raised his children and made his home on the farm in Brooks. Fred was fun-loving and a wonderful father. He valued family, togetherness, loyalty, and was a free spirit. He was always gracious; you never heard him speak poorly of anyone. Fred was most inspired by his own father and he touched all his children and grandchildren with his wisdom and set a great example for how to live life. His dream was to travel all over the world and to absorb all it had to offer. He was always interested in learning about different cultures. Fred is survived by his wife, Diann of Brooks; sister, Shirley Thomas of Fayetteville, N.C.; son, Trevor (Cherry) Pugh of Chandler, Ariz.; daughter, Tracy (Terry) Story; son, Sean (Jolene) Pugh; and stepchildren, Phil Henry and Anne Dively, all of Salem; grandchildren, Sharise, Heather, Ty, Marissa, Shelby, Jordan, Zach, Blake, Nicolas, Andrea, Aubrey, Alicha, Jon and Josh; and his dog, Toto. A Gathering of Remembrance will be held at 12 p.m., Fri., November 13 at Labish Center Church. Arrangements by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors.

Sorry to hear of Fred's passing - what a great guy! One of the hardest "hitters" and most difficult to tackle on our NSHA championship football team. He was well regarded as a football player and friend. He was well liked and had a great sense of humor and a smile to go with it. My prayers are with his family...Roger Zumwalt (Stayton, Oregon)

To Trevor, Tracy and Sean,
You may not remember me, but I was the third grade and music teacher at Brooks Elementary. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your extended family at this time. It's not easy losing a parent, but look to your heavenly Father and he will be there to comfort you.

I remember Fred from High School. We played together on the football team. I loved blocking for Fred because he made the right moves that made the linemen better at their positions. Fred was an outstanding student, good friend and a person you wanted to associate with. I haven't seen Fred since HS but I will always remember him. We are so sorry that his family has lost a wonderful father, grandfather & husband.

Fred, Lewie Davies and I played in the band together from Parrish through the North Salem years. We held up the trumpet section very well. While at OSU Fred and I were very close. Fred always had a nice, lowered, rumbling glass-packed car from high school on so he was a great source of transportation. We chatted, at length, at the 40 and 45 year NSHS reunions. Fred and I experienced many life memories togethers, we continued to e-mail until just a few weeks ago. My condolences to Diane and the rest of Fred's family. He was a great guy and will be missed.

Fred was my team-mate on the NSHS football team. He was a fine football player, as well as an all-around good guy to know. To his family: Please know that you are in my thoughts at this difficult time. Pat Loy (Baltimore, MD)

I am so sorry to read of your family's loss. Fred was just a great guy---a high school classmate. Makes me smile to remember "Cannonball" crashing thru the defensive line! And he seemed to love that crashing part so much! It was fun to see him at our 45th reunion. At our 50th we will remember him with much fondness. Pat Blake LaRock (Vancouver, WA)
