Gary Mowry Obituary

Gary L. Mowry
February 7, 1936 - April 28, 2021
Kansas City, Missouri - Gary L. Mowry, 85, of Kansas City, MO passed away on April 28, 2021. He was born in St. Joseph, MO on February 7, 1936 to Adolph and Flora Mowry. Gary lived in St. Joe with his sister Patricia and attended Lafayette High School but found his calling at Kansas University as an artist and basketball player where he was a team member on the 1957 championship squad and he met his wife of over 60 years Kay Mowry. They had three sons Cole, Brant and Kyle Mowry and two grandchildren Christopher Mowry and Adara Mowry. In his later years after the death of his wife he spent two and half years with his loving companion Jody Hoover. He spent many years in the advertising world, primarily at Brewer Advertising and Young & Rubicam where he was Vice President and Creative Director. He then set out on his own, continued freelancing, painting and sharing his talents with friends, family and those who appreciated his skills. His paintings are owned by people all over the world. Gary spent his later years in an independent living facility where the community he lived, loved his cartoons and illustrations and his stories of KU basketball. Also where the younger high school employees adopted him as their "Grandpa". But most of all his infectious smile and open heart portrayed a good man who will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at Riverstone Retirement Community, 9000 N Congress, Kansas City MO. 64153, Tuesday May 4 from 1-3.
Masks will be required and social distancing will be observed.
