Family,
I was at the ST Pat's game last night and I heard of the Passing of Gary. I played basketball with him at Northeaster, and he was and outstanding basketball player and team mate. He was always a fun loving person, and he got along with everyone who knew him. My condolences to your complete family and Gary will always be in my thoughts when I remember our basketball playing days.

It's New Year's Eve, the last day of 2014 and I wish you were here. It is so sad that you won't be. It is even sadder that you will not be here for 2015, 2016 and so on. I hope you know what a positive impact you made on so many people. Caitlin gave an incredible eulogy about you at your funeral mass. Some of the material was definitely acquired in the days leading up to it as friends and family shared their stories with her. She did a great job putting it all together and it all spelled special YOU! Together, Garrett and Caitlin gave you an incredible send off placing so many of your loved effects or items that told a story of you around the parlor. Pictures and videos and friends galore. It was beautiful and you would have been proud of how well they memorialized your life. It seems you even had a funeral crasher which was pretty funny after the fact. We all tried to figure out who the mystery guest was and even approached and inquired after introducing ourselves and thanking him for attending but even then no one could put on finger on who he was. In retrospect, you probably would have loved it, remembering some of your stories. Well, here is hoping that you and the old gang are going to welcome the New Year together celebrating that all of you are now without pain, without bills, without disease, without medicine, without any of the ails that you all may have had on earth. Missing you and all the others....

I shared Homeroom with Gary at St. Pat's for 4 years.
Gary's accomplishments made me proud to call myself a Shamrock to others.

Thank you! Gary for sharing yourself with so many others.

Well, it has been a couple of weeks and I am still waiting for your calls, I am expecting you to call. I know that is not going to happen but this is the holiday afterall and like mom, you loved holidays when everyone could get together. It will not be the same without you but know that you are remembered, that you will be thought about and more likely talked about. Your friends said some incredibly beautiful things about you at your services. All great and all so right on about you. Your Garrett and Caitlin, did a great job in memorializing you with so many of your likes and accomplishments available for viewing. Hoping you are with all the rest of the family we will be missing this holiday and that while we celebrate your lives here you celebrate with each other.

I was just informed about Gary. I am deeply sorry for you loss of a wonderful person. I went to Northeastern with Gary and we had many great times in the gym. He and I would always joke after his basketball practice sessions and my volleyball practice. Gary was and I'm sure still is one heck of a basketball player. My prayers are with you all.

They keep telling me that it's going to get easier and that I'm fine but it's been 2 weeks and it's 3pm on a Thursday in December and suddenly everything is so much harder than it was yesterday. I would do anything just to get another phone call from you. I miss you so much: I missed you before you were gone and I will miss you forever. I love you so so so so so much.

Gary and Marty O'G on a basketball court were like Barman and Robin- Fric and Frac- Shake and Bake- West and Baylor. When u played with them u were confident, and when u played vs. them u were in for a whippin'. But after the game there was always laughs and friendship and cold ones etc. Gary loved his "baskets"- and he loved life- and condolences to his family and his running mate Marty O'Gradney. I saw them at the Har Hig Tap summer of 2013 as they were having a warm up before going to Sabatino's and we laughed and talked baskets and hugged and they invited me to dine w them but I could not- and we reminisced some more and that was the last time I saw Gary and I will not forget that chance encounter on a summer afternoon in 2013. He was a teddy bear of a guy and a Chicago original. Perhaps the Good Lord needed a shooting guard upstairs, and Gary was the guy as he was called up to heaven. Amen to a larger than life great guy !!!!

I went to St. Pat's with Gary and although we were never close friends we always seemed to bump into each other through the years. He always knew my name and treated me like we were best of friends. He was a great guy, God bless.

Gary loved fishing, sports, his family, and life. Most of all bringing joy to all his friends and family. He was always positive in many ways to people even when his life wasnt on a happy track.
Our fondest memories of Gary go back to the times when the Staniec family were at Wrigley singing the 7th inning stretch.
I will miss my friend.,

As we would all like to be remembered when young, so will I always remember Gary, in uniform (whether St. Pat's or NEIU's) driving to the side, pulling up for a jumper, bringing the crowd to its feet, smiling that smile. May he be at peace, and may God bring comfort to his family.
