I knew George and Mary-Jo for 28 years and you could not have a relationship with just one of the two, it had to be both. The work George did for so many, who truly needed his advocacy, voice and compassion cannot be understated, nor can his commitment to his family. George was a man that was a far better listener than he was a talker, bringing everyone's thoughts and goals together to make a resolute decision that moved things forward, a true and caring leader. George with his wife Mary-Jo were an unstoppable force in the advocacy of their son Allen, and all persons with developmental/intellectual disabilities. I will miss them both greatly and will always live with the amazing example that they both gifted to me as I maintain their legacy as guardian for Allen. Thank You George.

George was a wonderful leader in the developmental disabilities network. He drove me to a conference once out in cattle country: his counsel then has stayed with me throughout my career. He was a natural leader, a kind man, soft hearted but never soft-headed. I am sorry I just learned of his death: I was hoping to see him one more time on an official visit to Seattle. I hope many of the ideas and programs he started will keep going for generations. I know they would be deeply meaningful to parents of sons and daughters with developmental disabilities. Thank you to his family for sharing his life with us.

I had just been promoted from service representative to business office supervisor in the little Renton Office. Mr. Walker, came out to observe calls with me. I had a terrible cold. I wheezed, sneezed and blew the entire time in that cramped little room. I really didn't know what I was doing. He was kind, helpful and gracious. From that day in 1966 until my retirement in 1986, he was the same kind, supportive person he was then. He was in my corner. I owe him thanks for any success I achieved. He was a great enabler. RIP GAW

Over the years at PNB/USW I wrote speeches for George and was involved in media relations. George was a wonderful client; he never ran for cover, was a great intellect and never failed to see the humor in our many "corporate fire drills." He was a rare executive that consistently brought out the best in those around him, always remembering to thank the people on his team. I can see him now piloting his boat up the Swinomish Channel. MaryJo, so very sorry for your loss. George was very influential in my csreer during the many times our paths crossed at the phone company. From the time as Seattle Division manager when he reviewed collection accounts with me in Unit C to the time his humorous response in testifying at the WUTC brought down the entire commission. George was always willing to listen and made you feel part of the team whatever the situation. He was also willing to support team members achievements with celebrations like the Hotai awards and conferences for his department in Idaho. He was a loyal member of the breakfast Club where enjoyed the storytelling and humor of the group. Although George circulated in many upper level circles throughout the greater Seattle and Washington, he never forgot his roots and those who worked with him over his many years in the phone company. I was always impressed with his dedication to his family including his most recent TV presentation in support of programs to assist those like his son. There will never another one like George.

George touched a lot of lives as a leader in his many active roles in our community and in our state. He was a unique individual who provided assistance to many in need. During our visits with George over the last few years, he had a smile and a story related to the many people who worked with him and shared his involvements. George may not be with us physically, but his spirit will be with us always.
Mary Jo,our thoughts a prayers are with you and the family.

George was one of the most influential individuals I ever worked with. He impacted so many, with such grace, and I have always been grateful for all that he did for me. Not only did he set a standard for all of us, he was one we never wanted to let down. Also, It was his involvement with the Special Peoples Cruise that lend me to get involved in Special Olympics. George was truly unique, and one who will be sorely missed. RIP Bob McGinnis

It was an honor to be part of George's organization, as he always made you feel that you were part of the team. Seriousness could be broken by his sense of humor, to the relief of all in a meeting.

Mary Jo, I am so very sorry for your loss. When we talked last, I wasn't aware that George was sick. He was such a very special person, always thoughtful and kind. I appreciated the letter he wrote to me when Bob passed away less than six months ago. All my best to you and your family.

George Walker was a long time Developmental Disability Council chair and great supporter of the community imperative and inclusion of people with developmental disabilities. As chair he provided wise, steady, soft spoken, value based and effective leadership at a time it was much needed. In short, he was inspirational and a key part of the disability rights movement. He will be missed.... Mark Stroh, Executive Director of Disability Rights Washington

I worked with Mr. Walker (he was always Mr. Walker, not George, to me. We lived and worked in a much more polite and civil atmosphere back in the day) in his Public Policy Department during the 1980's and 90's. It was a wonderful time in the telecommunications arena. We worked hard, but had a lot of fun at conferences and staff meetings. Mr. Walker had such a great sense of humor. It was always a pleasure to work with him.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Mary Jo, and the rest of your family.
With deepest sympathies,

I first met George when I was transferred to Seattle from Omaha in 1985 and didn't know a soul. George, as he had done for so many people over his long career, took me under his wing and became that friendly face that I could always look for even years later at PNB lunches. He was always very good to me and I will never forget his kindness. He will be missed.
