Hazel Diffin Obituary

Hazel V. Diffin, 89

SOUTH PORTLAND - Hazel V. Diffin, 89, of South Portland, passed away Jan. 31, 2017, at the Odd Fellows' & Rebekahs' Home of Maine, where she had been a resident for the past three years.

She was born in Portland, Nov. 13, 1927, the daughter of Roland C. and Myrtle (Thompson) Lothrop. She attended local schools and graduated from Deering High School.

In 1946, she married her husband, Leo Diffin, and together they raised their five children.

Hazel was a 70-year member of the Odd Fellows' and Rebekahs' service organization, joining when she was 18, to follow in her mother's footsteps. During that time, she served as the recording secretary for over 50 years, and president of the Rebekah Assembly in 1984-85. She was a member of the board of trustees and long-range planning committee, and was key in carrying out her husband's vision of adding the nursing facility to the existing Odd Fellows' & Rebekahs' Home of Maine.

She not only served locally, but also was actively involved at the state level, serving as secretary for many years, and attending every International Rebekah Assembly until health no longer allowed it.

She was involved in the Christmas committee, always decorating the facility and buying gifts for the residents. She received the Meritorious Service award and the Decoration of Chivalry award.

That was not her only passion, however, as she made bus trips to Arlington National Cemetery in May to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier over 20 times. When she wasn't serving the lodge or on a trip, she found time to work at Maine National Bank for over 15 years, where she served as an executive assistant.

But if you knew Hazel, you would know that her true love and passion was for her children, grandchildren, and great-grand-children; she loved each and every one dearly.

She is survived by her children, Wayne Diffin and his wife Jane Honeck, of Robbinston; Ronald Diffin, of Fryeburg; Douglas and his wife Catherine Diffin, of Robbinston; and Gayle Albin, of South Portland; daughter-in-law Theresa Diffin, of South Portland; a sister, Donna Watkins, of Oakland; 14 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. She played a parental role in raising her granddaughters, Kristen Pease and Courtney Albin, with whom Hazel lived, together with her daughter Gayle, until entering the Odd Fellows Home.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1987; her oldest son, Gary Diffin, in 1971; and a sister, Carolyn Lothrop.

The family invites you to attend visiting hours to share your stories Friday, Feb. 3, at Jones Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, Portland, from 4-7 p.m. (Rebekahs' Service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m.). A funeral service will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 4, at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, at 9 a.m., followed by a committal service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook.

Fondly remembering my Rebekah sister, Hazel Diffin x

Vicki (Cookson) Rice

February 4, 2017

I am so sorry to hear of Mom D's passing. Thinking of all of my "brothers and sister" and praying you will find peace through the memories. I will always treasure the times we spent together growing up: the lake, learning to swim, "king of the hill" on the float, boating, Dad's pancakes ("just 1 more"), Rex getting covered with paint during a thunderstorm, ice skating in the winter...the memories keep flooding my mind.
She will be missed and will be forever loved.

Sending love to my "brothers and sister". We spent weekends at the camp on Forest Lake when my sisters and I were kids. Hazel and Leo were "Mom D" and "Dad D" and we were blessed to have 2 sets of parents who loved us and extra siblings! My older sister Cheri and Gary were a few months apart, Ron and I were only 2 months apart, while Doug and Vicki were only 1 month apart. Our families lives were intertwined for many years. May all the wonderful memories you hold in your hearts of your Mom bring you peace and comfort during this difficult time. I am in Florida with my Mom, or I would be there to give you all a hug. Love, Laurie Cookson Edes

Sending love on behalf of my Mom, Louise Cookson-Lancaster: Sending love and prayers for peace and comfort to Hazel's family. Hazel and my Mom were best friends from 1949 until she went home to be with Leo. They were as close as sisters could be. So many wonderful memories of years of raising children together and all the years with the Rebekahs. Hazel was instrumental in Mom's Assembly Journey as Mom's Assembly mother. She is so thankful that she was able to spend the day with Hazel at the 2016 Home Picnic and had an opportunity to visit with her before heading to Florida in October. Mom wishes she was able to be with the family to share this sad loss with them.

Caring for Hazel was an honor. I have so many fond memories. I will always miss the way she always yelled hello from across the dining room when i would come in to work. She never actually got my name right but she was close and i didnt mind because that was just Hazel.
She was so quiet...I would always tell her "Hazel you gotta yell at me, I cant hear!" To that she would smile and chuckle. She always had the biggest smile on her face and it could light up a room.
Prayers for her family, she had so much love for each of you...

I have known Hazel since 1995, when I came to work at Odd Fellows' and Rebekahs' Home of Maine. She was a wonderful person, kind and hardworking, dignified and dedicated. She was on my board of directors for many years and well deserved of the respect that she had from everyone who knew her. I was honored to have her come and spend her final years with us. While with us, she was honored by the Maine Health Care Association for her years of service to her community and received Care For Me honors from the state's First Lady, Ann Lepage in Augusta. A poster commemorating that event hangs in the hall at our Home. I will miss her soft spoken way and her lovely smile. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
