Heidi Kolterman, 67
SCARBOROUGH -- Heidi Hannelore Kolterman, 67, of Scarborough, formerly of Falmouth Foreside for over 25 years, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at her home with her son Neal at her side.
She was born on July 8, 1942, in Ludwigsburg, West Germany, the daughter of Anneliese Mayer and Kurt Knecht. Her early education was at a religious boarding school in Lindau, Bodensee. She then furthered her studies in fashion and design. Heidi grew up working in the family clothing business. As a result, she developed a great appreciation for European fashion and design, which she maintained throughout her life. Given her gift of beauty, Heidi occasionally modeled and was adored by many.
Heidi became engaged in 1968 to Roger Kolterman of Markgroeningen, West Germany in Wasserburg Bodensee, West Germany. They were married later that year in Stuttgart, West Germany. Roger had previously immigrated to Boston in 1960, Heidi joined him in Maine in 1969, and in 1972 and 1974 her sons Swen and Neal were born.
Heidi loved making her home on Foreside Road a beautiful place. She loved cooking and baking, working in her flower gardens, interior decorating and antiques. Heidi was particularly well known for her cheesecake. In her younger days she loved to ski and in later years traveled the world. Although Maine became her home, her heart and dearest thoughts always remained in Germany. The above photo was taken during a happy time in Paris during the late 80s. Despite numerous disabilities later in life, she showed a strength of spirit and independence that allowed her to live at home. Heidi maintained an interest in current affairs, community, and her family. She met each challenge with determination and positive thinking. Her enthusiasm, sense of humor, and expressive love for the simple pleasures of life is a lesson for all.
Adored most for her peaceful and open-hearted spirit, Heidi is survived by her former husband, Roger Kolterman of California; her son, Swen Kolterman and his wife Whitney and soon to be baby boy of California, her son, Neal Kolterman and his fiancée Esther Ott of Scarborough; her mother, Anneliese Knecht-Bruehl of Germany; her brother, Uli and Irene Knecht of Germany, and her sister, Traute Conrad and her husband Uli of Germany.
Funeral services for Heidi were held Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at 2 p.m., at The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Falmouth with Fr. James Dalton-Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery at a later time. Heidi's family has created a memorial of her life and it is available at www.mem.com.
