HERBERT LYTTLE Obituary

1921 - 2012 Born in Menlo Park, California in 1921, to Herbert G. Lyttle and Florence Burleson Lyttle, Herb was a 4th generation Californian. After spending his early years in Hueneme California, Herb moved with the family to Ojai. He and his two younger brothers, John and Rick, attended the Ojai Valley School and later the Thacher School, where Herb proved to be an expert horseman. He and his white horse, Electron, won many awards in Gymkhana and the two were featured in an action picture that served as the school icon for many years. In 1940 Herb began studying animal husbandry at Cornell University, but World War II interrupted his academic career. The US Marines soon recognized his math skills and put him to work teaching future Radar operators in Corpus Christi, Texas. It was there, on October 9, 1943, that he married Sally Miller of Tarzana, California. Several months later he was sent to officer's training school in Quantico, Virginia, where he soon fell ill with polio. He survived the disease, but left the Marines with atrophied chest muscles, a handicap that he stoutly ignored most of his life. Herb and Sally had four children, Leslie, "Cricket," and the twins, Martha and Mike. In 1956 Herb became manager of a feedlot in Kerman, near Fresno, owned by William H. Noble. At the time, the lot was operating at a loss for some unknown reason. Herb immediately recognized that the mill was grinding the feed too coarsely and, after a few changes, the operation began showing a profit. In 1961 the family purchased a home on a small vineyard near the San Joaquin River which they called Sycamore Point. They kept horses and there was always at least one dog, German shepherds being the favorite. After Sally died in 1992 at age 66, Herb remained on the ranch a few more years until 1994, when he married Patricia Hopper, a well-known and widely acclaimed ceramic artist, famous for her garden fountains and sculptures. Herb and Pat settled in Fresno where they were actively involved in the arts and many civic organizations. Herb had a great capacity for friendship and kept in touch for years with those he first knew in high school and college. His warmth and humor were legendary, and he was loved by all who knew him. Herb's death came after struggling several years with Alzheimer's. He died at home on Wednesday evening, July 11, 2012. The family would like to thank his loyal caregivers who helped to make his final years happy and comfortable: Norma, Nancy, Inez, Shayne, Annie, Monica, Rosemary and Denise. He is survived by his wife, Pat Hopper Lyttle; brother, Rick Lyttle of Pt. Reyes; children, Leslie Henderson of Watsonville, Cricket Ogren of Sacramento, Marti Lyttle of Seattle, Wa., and Mike Lyttle of Williamsburg, Va.; step-daughter, Anne Peck of Fresno; in addition to 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to The Alzheimer's Association (ALZ.org)

I worked with Herb when he was an expert in a lawsuit and then my wife and I became acquainted with him and with Pat. He and Pat were a delightful couple. Herb was a knowledgeable guy with a great sense of humor and a man of integrity and honesty. We will miss him. Our condolences to the family.

I would just like to briefly say how much Herb meant to me and my training as a young man. I called Herb every summer for 3 years asking for a job. He finally hired me to wash water troughs and I was with Noble Land and Cattle Co. for the next 17 years under Herb's tutelage. After I had worked my way up through the ranks to Management, Herb told everyone he only hired me to get me off his back. He was a tremendous influence in my life and development as a man. I could go on for hours about his leadership ability. He was definitely my mentor. I respected him as much as any man could. I am now 68 years old and have managed many businesses and owned successful businesses and am still involved. Much of my success throughout the years is due to Herb's training. I still remember many of his statements and think about him often. I still have a horse's head hat rack hanging in my office that Herb brought back to me from a trip to England. He was truly a great man!!! and a positive influence on so many lives.

Cricket and I were best friends from 4th grade through high school. When her family moved to Kerman, I was heartbroken. I did visit her there during the summers, and always enjoyed her whole family. Herb and Sally were amazing parents. I remember Herb being soft spoken and such a gentle man. He was quite the kidder though!

My condolences to all the family.

It is with sadness that I learned of Herb's passing. We were classmates at Ojai Valley School, along with Dick Bard and Jim Drace. Although it has been many years since I have see Herb, I will always remember him and his family with fondness.
My condolences to all of his family.
May he rest in peace.

Herb was a wonderful example of a father for anyone to emulate. He was always firm, but fair. And he never forgot his sense of humor, no matter what.

He gave me a wonderful piece of advise when I first met him. I was just starting back to college and he suggested I might try accounting. He said, "That's what I would do if I had it to do all over again." I did try it and I made a career out of accounting.

And I will never forget, after a long-winded answer to one of my questions, he ended by saying, "Oh hell, I've already told you more than I know!" What a great guy he was No one had to know Herb very long to really like and admire him.

I will really miss him. God bless Herb.

There is so much, but it all seems futile because words aren't enough. I love being Bopa's granddaughter. He was someone to look up to and always did the right thing with grace and humor. Like Ellen says, he was good at teaching us to not take things too seriously and tried to help us look at life a little lighter. I will miss him more than I can say.

I have so many wonderful memories of Uncle Herb! He was a good friend to my parents, and our families shared countless good times together. Along with all of Herb's good qualities, he had a special gift to make people laugh and enjoy themselves. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. My prayers are will all his family.

He was so much fun! I loved his fly-swatting pistol and his arrow-thru-skull headband. He loved to laugh and taught me not to take things too seriously.

No one ever had a more wonderful father than Dad. His attributes were so many, I can't really list them. He will remain a strong example of strength, humor and general goodness. He will be missed but never forgotten.
