On this gloriously beautiful day I remember Howard weeding his garden outside and his masterful flower arrangements indoors. He and my recently deceased husband shared a love of literature and of flora. Perhaps there´s someplace in the stratosphere where they can connect again.

I was so sad to hear of Dr. Anderson's passing. He was always very polite to me.

Not only did Howard lead a full and wonderful life, but he left his Family and Friends with a fuller life by knowing him. I always found Howard's sense of humor to be the best antidote to the worst parts of life. It was always special to be able to visit with Howard, because it allowed me to leave with smile.
As his spirit goes out into the Universe, I hope that it will impart those who have went before, and those that follow after with that same sense of humor that can see us all through the long nights of life.
Thank you Howard for allowing me to know you!

When my father was in a local nursing home in the late 1990s-2001, Howard regularly visited him--sometimes, I think, even more than I did! They enjoyed each other's company and so I too tried to visit Howard when he was suffering--but I certainly don't have his constancy or spirituality. But I did bring my spaniel, Little Dorrit, twice--the last time just two weeks before Howard's passing.
And Jenifer, my dearest friend and traveling companion, my sister from "across the pond," I will be here for you whenever you need me.

Howard was one of the first new colleagues I met when I returned to MSU to teach in 1978 -- he had been on the faculty already when I was taking elective English courses in 1971-73, but I never happened to take a course in the 18th century in those quarter-terms. His kindness, good humor, and on-going friendship in the 40+ years since then are among my most treasured memories. And his last couple of years at Stoneleigh made it possible for many of his circles of friends to overlap yet again as we visited with him, read with him, reminisced with him, celebrated birthdays with him, and got to visit with so many of his other friends and family who would come to see him there as well. A true gift of bringing people together in affection, intellectual and social conversations, and joyful presence. Thank you so much, Howard, and thank you Jenny for keeping us in touch with both of you.
