Howard Davenport Obituary

Howard Anthony Davenport passed away on July 20, 2024, at the age of 76. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Joann Basha Davenport and children, Cherilyn Davenport Norris, Randy Davenport, and Ryan Davenport. He was the father-in-law of Joseph Norris and Courtney Davenport and grandfather of Kara Norris, Kobey Davenport, and Grady Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Howard Davenport and Rosemary Nienaber Davenport, as well as his two brothers, Donald Davenport and David Davenport. After graduating from the University of New Orleans, Howard worked for Shell Oil Company for 33 years before retiring in 2003. In retirement, he sought the opportunity to be active, form friendships, and continue his competitive spirit. He discovered that the Greater New Orleans Senior Games was able to provide him with all three. Over the years, he competed in multiple events and won numerous medals. Howard excelled in shuffleboard and in 2019, he qualified for the National games in Albuquerque, NM, where he won the gold medal in singles and finished 4th in doubles with Claude Marengo. In 2018, he was elected President of the organization and was enshrined in the GNOSG Hall of Fame in 2019. Recently he joined the Italian American Bocce Club of Greater New Orleans and competed several times a week. He also enjoyed playing golf, beanbag baseball, and traveling with his family. He will be missed by family and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 1 PM. Visitation will begin at 10 AM. After the chapel service, Howard will be laid to rest in Metairie Cemetery. To view and sign the family guestbook, please visit lakelawnmetairie.com

Joann, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Howard. He came to visit me many times when he played golf in Diamondhead. I so enjoyed each visit and was so glad he thought enough to spend time with me. I know you will each one of you miss him so much. Keep your memories in your hearts as I will do. He was so special! May God Bless him and keep him close. Will keep Howard, you and your family in my prayers.
So sorry I am unable to attend his services, but living in Mississippi and being 91 years of age, it makes it impossible. I will be with you in my thoughts and prayers.
Love, Marlene
