James Coleman Obituary

James Dean Coleman

September 8, 1934 - August 9, 2025

Irmo, South Carolina - Dr. James Dean Coleman, affectionately known as "Gentleman Jim," passed away peacefully at his home in Irmo, South Carolina, on August 9, 2025. Born in 1934 in Long Beach, California, Jim lived a life marked by service, dedication, and kindness.

A proud graduate of Stanford University and Stanford University School of Medicine, Jim served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1970, including a tour during the Vietnam War. He achieved the active-duty rank of Commander and was honored to serve his country during a pivotal time in history.

Following his military service, Dr. Coleman entered private practice as an orthopedic surgeon at the Truesdale Clinic, where he cared for patients from 1970 until his retirement in 1999. His professional accomplishments included being named a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, serving as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Charlton Memorial Hospital, and leading as President of Truesdale Orthopedics. He also contributed to national athletics as a member of the Sports Medicine Committee for the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States. For nearly 20 years, he was the dedicated school physician for Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, where he supported generations of student athletes.

In retirement, Jim continued to give back to his community. He volunteered as a mentor at Dutch Fork Elementary School, where his warmth and encouragement touched countless young lives. His dedication to helping children succeed was recognized when he was named Mentor of the Year.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jean Marie Coleman; his children Richard Wesley Coleman and his partner Dena Rymsha, John Patrick Coleman and his wife Susie Watts Coleman, Deanna Coleman Boyle and her husband Scott Boyle, and Robert Matthews Coleman. He was predeceased by his eldest son, James Dean Coleman Jr., who was married to Barbara Coleman. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Jeremy, Hannah, Harry, Emily, Caroline, Ben, Camden, Ryan, and Bennett.

Those who knew "Gentleman Jim" will remember his quiet strength, his compassion for others, and his unwavering commitment to family, patients, and community. His life's work and example will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A memorial service will be held in his honor at 2 p.m. on October 4th at the St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Chapin, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a veterans' organization or a youth sports program of your choice.

The passing of this great man fills me with sadness.
Jim was one of the most selfless people that I have ever known. For thirty plus years he gave his best to his patients and to the youth of the greater Fall River area.
To me he was an inspiring mentor and a good friend. My sincere condolences to Jean and the entire family. I will miss our conversations greatly.
The world was a better place with Jim in it.
Rest in peace my old friend.

Jean and family,
I was saddened to hear of Jim´s passing. I always enjoyed working with him when he was the school physician at Durfee. Always such a kind and caring man with our students! He really enjoyed what he did. I also know how much he loved his family. I´m sure you have many great memories that will sustain you in the days ahead. My thoughts and prayers to all of you.

Hi john , lm sorry to hear about your dad ....he was a hero to so many , especially all the members of the Palumbo family . I think he treated every injury I had from about 1975 on....applied numerous casts , treated seemingly dozens of breaks , pulls , tears etc , whether during office hours or not ....he was always so generous with his time ....i remember my mother calling his office many times and the response was always the same ..."come right in"........I also recall numerous times being down on the field with an injury and seeing his face and hearing his voice and immediately knowing everything was going to be ok....some of my fondest memories were sitting around the den on Madison st , us on the floor, and him in his armchair watching the Bruins on ch 38 ....
He brought up one of the truly great Fall River families , he will be missed by all that we´re lucky enough to have known him ...all the best to you, your mom, Ricky , Deanna and Bobby .....Bryan Palumbo
