John Gregory Obituary

John H. Gregory

March 6, 1936 - July 9, 2023

John Hugh Gregory, age 87, of Emory, Virginia passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023.

John was a life-long resident of Emory, Virginia, John was a 1957 graduate of Emory & Henry College and retired after teaching 30 years at Marion Junior High in Smyth Co. Virginia. He was a member of Saint Anne's Catholic Church of Bristol, VA for 70 years and was a long standing member of Washington Co. VA Historical Society. He worked diligently in updating cemetery records in Washington Co. VA. The updated book, "High on a Windy Hill" went to press in 2018.

John was passionate about world history that extended beyond the boundaries of Washington Co, VA. He was a self-made historian through his reading of books. In 1968, his foreign travels began with Europe and continued for nearly 30 years taking groups of teenagers to Europe in the summers.

Survived by sister Laura Gregory Taylor & husband Joseph of Kingsport, Two nieces Monica McDaniel and Josie Widner. Special thanks to Jeanne Crowgey who has been more like a second sister than just a neighbor to John.

A graveside service will be Friday July 21, 2023 at 3 p.m. for family and close friends at Holston Conference-Emory & Henry Cemetery in Emory VA.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.eastlawnkingsport.com for the Gregory family. In lieu of flowers, we ask that in John's memory you read a book rich in history, enjoy a glass of wine, and embrace your interests as he did throughout his life.

I met John in 1969, when we were in Durham, England, for a 4-week study course at the University there. He was a chaperon-at-large & I was among the dozens of teenage kids that he had to try to keep in line. After that trip, we became pen-pal friends for life. - Safe travels from here, John. I will miss you.

Mr. Gregory was my English teacher in 7th grade. He was one to respect and made you want to do your very best. I was transferred to Mrs. Graybeal's class about mid year. Thank you, Mr. Gregory, for your leadership.

Laura and family,
I am very sorry to hear about the passing of John. I have many fond memories of your family while growing up in Emory.
Kay loved you like a sister, and John was always so kind to her when she visited your home.
I´ll be keeping you in my heart and prayers now and in the days ahead.

I was one of those lucky kids that he asked to go on a trip to Europe with him and I had the chance to thank him a couple of years ago for that wonderful opportunity. It was a wonderful trip and I still share that experience with others often. While there he bought a pair of wooden shoes and wore them one evening while enjoying some wine. I can still see him with his feet propped up on the table. My sincere condolences to his family in this town of loss. Thank you for sharing him with so many others.
