JOHN MCCARTHY Obituary

McCARTHY, John Daniel "Jack" 79, of Scituate, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Marylou McCarthy, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage. Devoted father of John McCarthy of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Kevin McCarthy (Angie) of Burke, VA and Lauren Tafur (Nino) of Leesburg, FL. Cherished grandfather to five grandchildren. Loving brother of Joanne Donahue (Jack) of Lorton, VA. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mr. McCarthy was employed for most of his life by the federal government, working as an auditor for several different departments and eventually retiring as an Executive for the Department of Defense. Jack was a proud veteran of the US Marine Corps. For many years, he was a member of Scituate's Satuit Band, the Roma Band of Boston's North End and the Naples Band in FL, in which he played the trombone. Although committed to his career with the federal government, his true passion was teaching, especially as a Professor of Accounting with Boston College. He developed much rapport with his students and truly made an impact on their lives, in many cases cultivating lifelong relationships with them. Above all else, the most important thing to Jack was his family and his devotion to them was unwavering. He was a loyal and faithful parishioner at St. Francis X. Cabrini Church and St. Mary's Church in Scituate and St. John the Evangelist Church in Naples, FL. A visitation will take place Wednesday, May 10th from 4-8 PM at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, SCITUATE. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, May 11th at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate. In lieu of flowers, contributions, in his memory, may be made to St. Mary of the Nativity Church. Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home

Dear Marylou,

My sincerest condolences to you on the loss of Jack. I had the privilege of teaching with him at BC. We had many a pleasant chat in the office before we began to teach our evening courses. He was a fine colleague and will be missed.
