When I was a college student at Otterbein University in Westerville, I was the head percussionist in the college band, and earned some of my tuition money by teaching drum lessons. One of my students was an 8th-grader name Kenny Thomas, who lived in a new subdivision in Westerville. I went to Kenny's home each week and gave the lessons in the family's living room. I noticed his father's name on a mailbox outside: R. David Thomas. I met Kenny's sisters and his parents, Lorraine and Dave. One day, I asked to use the bathroom before starting the lesson, and saw a life-size portrait of Colonel Sanders on the wall in the hallway. Returning to the living room, I said to Kenny: "It's none of my business, but why do you have a portrait of Col. Sanders in your hallway?" He replied that his father was the regional manager for Kentucky Fried Chicken, and that his dad really respected and admired the Colonel. He said, "My dad wants to have his own restaurant chain someday." One year later, his father started Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers, with its first location on East Broad Street in Columbus.
The drum lessons lasted for only a few months. Kenny had a terrible sense of rhythm, so I told his mother that additional lessons would be a waste of time and money.
My deepest sympathies to Mrs. Thomas, to all of Kenny's sisters and the rest of the family. I just learned today of Kenny's passing, and it made me very sad.

To Mrs Thomas, Pam, Molly, and Wendy, I am sorry hear of your loss. The memory of Kenny I will always have will be when we were kids and he and I painted Anchor Hocking's suite in Mr Thomas' Henderson Rd office building over a Christmas break. We put more paint on the glass samples, shelves and desks than the walls. Again, my condolences.

This is from an old friend. I have not seen you in many years, we, were happy way back then, it just wasn't our time. We parted as friends and I somehow new that if I needed you you would be there. I made it, without any help, but never saw you again. I always hopped we would. You are gone now and will never hear my thanks. I was sorry to hear about the loss of Kenny and all of your family is in my thoughts and prayers. My heart goes out to Kathy, your kids and the entire Thomas family. If it had not been for Nick and Susan O'Toole, I would never of had the pleasure of meeting you. I appreciate you opening your home to me on Thanksgiving. I also appreciate Kathy and Kenny allowing me the privilege of taking Kathy and Kenny's kids to the Columbus Zoo Christmas lights for a special night with the Thomas kids. I am deeply saddened to hear of Ken's passing. He was my manager at The Wendy's on West Broad Street across from Westland Shopping Center back in the late 70s. Ken was always fair, professional and fun to work with. May God comfort his family during this hard time, giving you strength and His love.
