LINDA MARIE SAMUEL 1956 - 2013
Linda M Samuel, longtime Justice Department official, passed away September 13, 2013 after a two-year battle with cancer. A native of Chinchilla, Pennsylvania, Linda received a BS in 1978 from Penn State University, and then moved to Washington, DC, where she earned a J.D. from Catholic University, and later, an LLM from Georgetown University Law School.Linda began a career in the service of her country at the Department of Agriculture. She continued as a devoted public servant serving in the Department of Energy from 1981 to 1984. She worked as a Trial Attorney in Department of Justice's Civil Commercial Litigation Branch from 1984 to 1990 and then transferred to the Department's Criminal Division. There, she rose to become Deputy Chief of the Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section's International Unit. Linda was known for her extraordinary sharp mind, her quick wit, indomitable spirit and undying passion for justice for all. Her skill, warmth and fairness earned her the respect and gratitude of dignitaries from around the world. Her wise counsel and warm friendship will be sorely missed by all who knew her.Linda is survived by her husband, Jake Jakubos; their son, Oliver and two daughters, Kendall and Haley. Also surviving are her parents, Gordon and Jeanne Samuel; her five siblings, Valerie Samuel Scott, Kelley Samuel, Jennifer Samuel Bernier, Susan Samuel McPherson and Gordon Samuel, Jr.; as well as her nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in her honor at The Department of Justice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation at TNBC Foundation, PO Box 204, Norwood, NJ 07648.

Dear Jake, Oliver, Kendall, Haley and the rest of Linda's family, It was truly my great fortune to be blessed with Linda's friendship for so many decades. In all sincerity, she was a hero to me -- loyal and brave with an unfailing sense of justice. She traveled a lot and worked hard, but in her heart there was never a question that her family was always first. She loved all of you so deeply. Even in the midst of her own health difficulties, she was also an encouraging friend to me. I never saw her angry or heard her utter an unkind word about anyone, unheard of in today's world. I was saddened to hear about the passing of Linda Samuel. I first met Linda at a conference in Bali, Indonesia and then met her a couple of more times in Asia and Washington DC. I am happy to have had the pleasure to meet her and hear her speak. She was a gifted attorney and a “superhero” at her craft. Many people in Asia, including myself looked up to her and will miss her. Rest in Peace.

So sorry, Jake and family for the loss of your beautiful Linda! I worked with and managed Linda at the Dept. of Justice in both the Judgment Enforcement Unit and the Asset Forfeiture Office. Linda and I were great friends in law school. She was such a joy to be around, and I loved the (unfortunately few) times we were able to get together in the years to follow. She always entertained with her stories of adventures around the world. I know how much she loved her family: Jake and the children, and her parents and sisters and brother. Linda was my closest female friend in law school. She was a godsend to me. She guided me in affairs of the heart -- guided me through some serious relationships. She also guided me in social graces and how to be a good friend. It was Linda who told me that I needed to ask permission of my wife's parents before I proposed to my wife. Asking permission may not be normal course today, but it was very important then to my wife's parents.
Linda was such a solid person, a fortress. I trusted her judgment more than my own. She was my confidante, my sounding board.
I am sad for me, but even very sadder for Bev Willett, Jake, the children, and the rest of the family.
We have lost one of our very, very best classmates.

Linda was a dear work colleague and friend of mine for many years in the international anti-money laundering community. She was very kind and compassionate to me when I lost my wife to breast cancer in September 2010.
