MARGE WHITE Obituary

Marge Thrasher White Born Margie LuRae Borg, February 26, 1934, Marge Thrasher White died after a long illness on August 17th, 2012. There will be a funeral to celebrate her life at Kingsway Christian Church on Friday, August 24 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a private burial. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Kingsway and at 9:30 a.m. Friday before the service. Marge was preceded in death by her parents, Adrianna and Russell Borg of Lohrville, IA. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Dr. Charles E. White and her sister, Barbara (Earl) Davis of Lohrville, IA. She leaves a large family, including her sons Houston (Ann-Marie) Thrasher of McLean, VA and Barton Thrasher (Cristy) of LaGrange, TN. Her daughters, Melissa (Michael) Peeler of Memphis, TN and Julie (James) Isaacs of Richmond, VA. Her three stepchildren, Heather Krupp of Atlanta, GA, David (Melba) White of South Fulton, TN and Knox (Laurel) White of Los Angeles, CA. Marge, affectionately known as “Mimi”, adored her thirteen grandchildren: Eli and Ben Thrasher; Adi, Bo and Sarah Thrasher; Mary, Anna, and Margie Peeler; Kathryn and Alex Krupp; Megan and Rachel White and Sawyer White. They were a great source of joy and pride for Marge and she will be immeasurably missed by all of them. Growing up in rural Iowa, Marge excelled in both academics and athletics. She attended Iowa State, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, and Iowa Wesleyan, where she was a leading scorer on the basketball team. She continued a love of the game throughout her life. Marge was also an avid tennis and Bridge player, who especially cherished the deep friendships forged with her playing groups. Born into a musical family, Marge began her lifetime love of music as a two-year old singing on KRNT in Des Moines and then performing for War Bond rallies during WWII. She regularly sang duets at church with her mother and choral groups including the Sweet Adelines in Memphis. Known best for her decades long radio and television career in Memphis, Marge was host of such shows as WHER’s Open Mike, WWEE Radio’s afternoon talk radio show and WHBQ’s Straight Talk with Marge Thrasher and AM Memphis as well as being their noon news anchor. She especially enjoyed her interviews with such notables as Elvis Presley, Julia Child, Dolly Parton, Nancy Reagan, and Billy Graham. Marge volunteered for numerous charitable events and co-chaired the Memphis Symphony Ball that brought Tony Bennett to Memphis in 1987. She regularly delivered motivational speeches to regional and national organizations as well as consulted to business and medical professionals on media relations. After retiring from television, Marge enjoyed a long and successful second career in real estate and was a life member of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors’ Multiple Million Dollar Club. A member of Kingsway Christian Church since the 1960’s, Marge was active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship and Discipleship Sunday School Class. She was proud to support the fundraising efforts to move the Schaeffer Memorial Chapel to the Church’s current location. A founding member and past President of the Mid South Chapter of the American Women of Radio and Television, Marge joined an international delegation to present Princess Margaret with a lifetime achievement award in London. She was a former member of The University Club, the Mystic Society of Memphi and the Memphis Area Transit Authority Board. Charlie and the family would like to especially acknowledge the superior caregiving and friendship of Jean Holman, Cathy Fason, and Mark Finney. The family requests that you consider making a memorial gift to Kingsway Christian Church or to an organization of your choice in lieu of flowers. The family also hopes to establish a broadcast journalism scholarship at the University of Memphis in her honor. Memorial gifts for that scholarship should be sent to The University of Memphis Foundation for the Marge Thrasher White fund. Bart,
I was saddened by news of your mother's death. I was out of the country at the time. I know how deeply you loved your mother and how proud she was of all her children and grandchildren. May she rest in peace and may all of your fond memories of her remain in your heart forever.

Miss Borg was my 7th grade Homeroom teacher in Lake City, IA. It was her first teaching job and she hailed from our neighboring town of Lohrville. I remember her as very caring and truly interested in all of her students. She was very encouraging. I remember she had an old jeep and she would take kids home from school events in it. Also, she directed our 7th grade skit for Homecoming and we won first place---beating the Seniors!

May she rest in peace!

What an extraordinary Mother, women and friend. I will miss Marge, but she will always live in my heart for she is one of my four heroes. (all women of course) She exceeds definition of the word, unselfishness. Her life was always full, but she always seem to make room for more. How she threw me and Dawn in the mix, I will never understand. But that was Marge. I felt she always listened and loved me unconditional, and that is one reason, she is my hero. I strive to be a good listener like your Mother. I will always treasure my memories of Graham and living with you guys in East Memphis. I miss you all. I will miss your Mother but my thoughts of her will never fade. She has always made an impression on me and it will continue. I love you all and you are in my prayers. Robin

Julie- your mom was always so supportive of what you were doing - at the Children's Theatre, at St. Mary's - and so lovely to me on the occasions I went on her show to publicize the Children's Theatre. I remember her so fondly. Know that you have a lot of support here from old friends and people who have loved you since you were a little kid!

Marge has been an inspiration—a broadcast media pioneer and a strong, warm, wonderful woman. We feel so fortunate to have met and interviewed her for our NPR story WHER—1000 Beautiful Watts: the First All Girl Radio Station in the Nation. Marge was at the heart of WHER with her show Open Mike, one of the first radio call-in programs of its kind, and certainly the first hosted by a woman. She was curious, smart, bold, feisty, and had a great way with people. She, and the other WHER “girls,” paved the way for so many of us in media. We will miss her greatly and think of her often. Thank you, Marge. Our heart goes out to Marge's family and to all those who loved her and were part of her exceptional life and career.

With admiration and love,
The Kitchen Sisters, Nikki Silva & Davia Nelson

Dear Dr. White and Family: What great memories I have of working with Marge at Channel 13! She was a delight; whether she wanted me to be a guinea pig for one of her show segments (one couldn't say "no"), or working with her as acting associate producer, there was never a dull moment! She had a true talent of putting any guest at ease. Talking with her, you felt that you knew her children--and later on, it was a joy to see her happiness after she met and married you, Dr. White. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you.

As a Nashville-based friend of Michael and Melissa, we got to enjoy Marge when she visited Nashville and when we visited Memphis. Marge was so gracious and sweet to host our family in her home and include us in several great family events. She was a wonderful grandmother, a consumate host, a great role model and we have so many great memories of times spent with her. Much Love to all the Thrasher's and White's

A most pleasent and warm people person. She will be greatly missed. Back in about 1968 I first called her on her radio "Open Mike" and recommended all to read "Black and Free" by Tom Skinner (then a black evangelist).
Then in about 1978 (Jimmy Carter was running for president) He had made a statement about sin that became a national controversy. Another caller was her guest, explaining no one could define "sin."
I just had to call in because I had just did research, to answer one of my students question: "Tell me what the Bible says sin is." That was a great life less for me also!

Marge was mentor and friend when I was a rookie news producer at WHBQ-TV, first for the 8am news, then for the noon news which she co-anchored with our wonderful news director Don Stevens. Marge's heart was huge and welcoming, and her advice and experience were enormously helpful. Funny, she was on my mind just a couple of days ago. Now I know why. Thank you, dear Marge.

Marge was a totally vibrant woman, genuine and down-to-earth always. I met her when she, fresh from Iowa, came to Jackson, TN to work for the radio station. Later we both moved to Memphis, became good friends, played bridge for years and raised our families, while she also held down a fulltime job as a pioneer woman broadcaster. My warmest memories of Marge are as a dear, loyal friend who could connect deeply with others, and I'll remember her laugh and her great zest for living.

My sincere condolences to her family. Sarah Schade, Brevard, NC

Dear Dr. White & family, I was saddened to hear of Marge's passing. Please know that my thoughts & prayers are with the entire family during this time. I always enjoyed talking to Marge & she was always the most gracious hostess when we had the office Christmas parties at your home. I remember so fondly how excited you were to give her the new Mercedes one year. It was green if I remember correctly. It was such an honor to work for you & I cherish that time & the time shared with her. God bless all of you.

I worked with Marge for four years on the Noon Show. She immediately went to the top of my list of the best people I ever worked with. What you saw was what you got. A genuine Lady, a TV personality, and a great friend. I missed her when I left Memphis in 1992 and miss her even more now. I hope I get to see her some day in the broadcast hall of fame in heaven.
