Marian Estella Thomas Stone, 99, passed peacefully at her daughter's home in Lubbock, Texas on March 10, 2026. Her life was long and well-lived, full of love, music, and family. Known for her hospitality and altruism, she taught music in schools for 32 years, 22 years in Midland.
Born in Kingsville, Texas, on August 31, 1926, to Louie Thomas and Gertrude Ford, she and her sister, Madge, were drawn to music through their mother. Marian graduated from Texas A&I, majoring in Music and English.
In 1947, she married her one true love, John (David) Stone of Kingsville, a young petroleum engineer, and began teaching in public school. She suspended teaching in 1950 to raise her 4 children, though she often taught piano out of her home. In 1964, she resumed teaching, continuing until 1994, with hundreds of young people as her students. Teaching was her life long passion. She performed with local symphonies and chamber groups and sang in her church choirs for 70 years.
Through it all, her dedication to life within the church as a child of God never wavered. A long-time member of First Presbyterian in Midland, she gave her time to the church, and in her final days, she sang hymns to herself for comfort.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, David, and her youngest daughter, Kathryn.
Marian is survived by the families of her children: Ellen and Bashir Khan of Sugarland, TX; John and Lee Stone of Tyler, TX; and Vicki and Bill Teakell of Lubbock, TX, as well as Kathryn's husband, Jon Marshall, of Colorado Springs, CO.
The descendants of Marian and David now number 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. They knew and loved their Mom/Grandmother/Gigi and hold her close in their hearts and memories.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 4, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Ellis Funeral Home followed by graveside inurnment at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Marian's life journey is over, and she rests in peace and beauty with God. Donations can be made to Breast Cancer or BeyondFaith Hospice in Lubbock, whose compassionate care blessed her final days.
