Marilyn Lueken Obituary

Marilyn Ann Lueken

March 9,1940 ~ November 28, 2025

Marilyn Ann (Brodie) Lueken of Freeland WA passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on November 28, 2025. She is survived by her husband, Ralph Lueken, son Daniel Lueken, daughter Shari Lueken, brothers Ralph Brodie, Delbert (Peggy) Brodie and Richard (Deanie) Brantley, brother-in-law William Rohweder and many nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was born at Everett General Hospital to Alex and Alta Brodie on March 9, 1940. She grew up in Lake Stevens, WA. She was a member of Sunnyside 4-H club as a student and later as a leader. She was involved with sewing and canning categories. When she was 14 years old, she performed in the "Joyland Revue", as one of more than 60 roller skaters. Marilyn graduated from Lake Stevens High School in 1958. In 1960 she graduated from Everett Junior College and she graduated from Western Washington University in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teaching certificate.

Marilyn was an elementary school teacher who loved children. While off work during the summers she travelled the world. Her love of travel brought her to live and work in Scotland for a year with her friend Ann Iwano. Years later Marilyn brought Ralph and Shari to Scotland and Norway so she could share her love of travel with them. While teaching, Marilyn incorporated her knowledge of other cultures. She and other teachers spent a great deal of time researching and cataloguing information about the Tulalip Tribe which was published as a book. Marilyn also gave lectures about travelling abroad. Marilyn had a cabin built in Freeland, WA while she was a young, single woman.

In 1985 Marilyn married her husband, Ralph Lueken. They adopted their daughter Shari and Marilyn took early retirement. Ralph and Marilyn lived in Marysville then moved to Whidbey Island in 1999. In 2007 Marilyn adopted Daniel. She was a strong advocate for her children and a loving mother. Marilyn was involved in her community, volunteering for her HOA, teaching parents about reactive attachment disorder and participating in RAP, Relatives as Parents support group. Marilyn had many friends who loved her dearly.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Alta Brodie and by her sister, Irene Rohweder and sister-in-law Sharon Brodie. Services will be held at Langley United Methodist Church on Whidbey Island on December 17, 2025 at 1pm. Her burial will be at Floral Hills Cemetery in Lynnwood, WA on December 18, 2025 at noon. Memorials can be made to Langley United Methodist Church, Good Cheer Food Bank or Island Senior Services Meals on Wheels program.

This was a beautifully written obituary from my aunt Marilyn. Unfortunately, it states that she was survived by her brother-in-law, William Rohweder, who actually passed away in 2013. Regardless, it was nice to see my father mentioned in her obituary. I was so fortunate as a teen at age 15 to be able to go to Scotland with Marilyn and visit a penpal I have been writing to for many years that Marilyn arranged the friendship with. After my mother Irene passed away, Marilyn made sure to be a relative who was always in my life and my kept in contact for my well-being. I valued her for always wanting to be a part of my life.
