Mary Alice Jefferson passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at University of Colorado, Anschutz Hospital from complications of surgery. She was born on August 1, 1955, at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Co., the daughter of LeRoy Melvin Jefferson and Laura Antoinette (Spencer) Jefferson.
Mary graduated from Bishop Machbeuf High School and went on to receive a B. A. in English from Colorado State University at Fort Collins. She continued her education obtaining an M.A in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.
After considerable years working in retail at companies such as Sears, Roebuck and the U.S. Coast Guard Exchange, Mary changed careers to support students in the for-profit education industry, work that she found more fulfilling. She worked for Masters Institute as well as Corinthian Colleges in California before returning to Denver where she was employed at IntelliTec Medical Institute and DPT Business School.
Over the years, Mary’s greatest joy came from volunteering. Mary was a dedicated volunteer for Junior Great Books as well as Junior Achievement. In recent years Mary has been a volunteer for the District 8 Denver Democratic Party. In fact, she received recognition as the Volunteer of the Year in 2019.
Mary’s parents, LeRoy Melvin Jefferson and Laura Antoinette Jefferson, as well as her brother, LeRoy (Skip) Melvin Jefferson, preceded her in death. Mary leaves behind her brother Reginald and his wife Terry, her sister Susan and her husband Bruce, her brother Byron, and his wife Lisa, as well as her brother Michael and his wife Carrie. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Mary leaves behind a host of friends, colleagues, and fellow volunteers who will deeply miss her.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Colorado League of Women Voters.
