Maryellen Noonan Obituary

Maryellen Noonan of Wethersfield, CT and Wellfleet, MA, the beloved wife of Patsy DeFrancesco was taken into God's care with peace and grace on December 9, 2017. Maryellen was the daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Scanlon) Noonan of Wethersfield. She was born and raised in Wethersfield where she grew up nurturing her dreams to have a family and become a teacher. Maryellen was a graduate of South Catholic High School and earned degrees from Central Connecticut State University and the University of Connecticut. She was free-spirited and adventurous as a young woman and traveled to Europe between her junior and senior years of college. Upon graduating from college, she began her first teaching assignment accepting a position with the Newington Public Schools. Married soon after, she and Pat ventured abroad where Maryellen taught at St. John's English Speaking School in Waterloo, Belgium, and Pat worked for an International Insurance Company in Brussels. On the weekends, they packed up their little Volkswagen beetle, and with maps and tour books in hand, drove off to explore magnificent European cities and the beautiful historic countryside. Maryellen and Pat returned home to Wethersfield preparing for their first child as they began their family. And soon, Maryellen returned to teaching in Newington. She was passionate about teaching and learning. She enthusiastically embraced every new opportunity to grow as an educator, while always remaining focused on what was best for her students. Beyond her classroom, she was devoted to the support of new teachers who were beginning their careers. Working for the State Department of Education, she trained mentors and cooperating teachers to guide the next generation of classroom teachers. Yet, her pride and joy were the students she shared her classroom with each day. She was devoted to them. She believed in them and delighted in their successes. Maryellen loved teaching from the moment she stepped into her very first classroom. Maryellen was grateful for all the blessings in her life; faith in God, family and friends. Maryellen loved the time she spent gathering together with her precious family at their home in Wethersfield and at the beach house in Wellfleet celebrating birthdays and holidays together as she and Pat watched their children grow. Maryellen adored them and encouraged each of her children to follow their own individual dreams. She reveled in their accomplishments. She treasured the memories of family trips to Florida, Arizona, Ireland, Italy and Bermuda. She loved a quiet walk along the beach with her beloved husband and life-long best friend, Pat, as well as the excitement of time they enjoyed in NYC visiting their sons. Yet, most dear to her heart was the joyful commotion in the kitchen preparing a family dinner and then a cozy gathering around the fireplace together. Maryellen took great pleasure in dinner parties with special friends, meeting her cousins at the Irish Club, and book club nights filled with lively discussions, laughter, and friendship with an amazing group of women. Maryellen also looked forward to early morning coffee talk and gathering around a dear friend's dining room table to share and often laugh at all that was happening in their lives. She felt blessed by the people in her life. Over the years, family became dearer and special friends grew closer and became family. And with the joy of those held close there was also the sorrow of the passing of her dearest friend, Joyce Gibbons, almost four years ago. Maryellen missed Joyce's sage advice, and the laughter they shared, but mostly her true friendship. With her devoted husband, Maryellen leaves to mourn her passing her sons and daughter whom she cherished with all her heart: Patrick DeFrancesco of Manhattan, NY, Marissa Kach and her husband Dustin of Glastonbury, CT, Thomas DeFrancesco and his partner Jeffrey Quitmeyer of Manhattan, NY and Daniel DeFrancesco of Rocky Hill, CT. And she leaves her dearest granddaughter, Katherine Kach. Maryellen is survived by her brother Bruce Noonan and his wife Pamela of Miami, Florida and her brother-in-law Nicholas DeFrancesco and his wife Trish of Newington, CT. She also leaves her beloved cousins and most dear and treasured friends. Maryellen was a parishioner at Corpus Christi Church throughout her childhood until recent years when she became a member of the Church of the Incarnation. The family thanks, Father Moran, Sister Betty, Toni Munoz and all those who gathered for daily Mass every morning in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for their caring, support and prayers throughout this difficult time. Maryellen's family lovingly thanks all those devoted family members and friends who prayed for her during her illness and surrounded her with love and encouragement. And we extend our heart-felt thanks to dear friends Patty Kearney, Kate Sloan, Carol Clark, Jean and Dan Clifford, Midge Mongillo and Beth Sticca for being with us every step of the way. The family thanks Dr. Carol Petruff, Dr. Susan Rabinowe, Lynn Sperini , Bonnie Zebrowski (St. Francis Hospital) and Dr. Randy Luciano (Yale New Haven Hospital) for their care, compassion, kindness and dedication beyond measure. Family and friends are invited to gather to share memories of Maryellen and offer prayers on December 12, 2017 from 4 -7 o'clock PM, at D'Esopo's Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield on December 13, 2017 at 10:00 am. There will be a private burial. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to UNICEF, 125 Maiden Lane, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10038. Two years later and I find myself thinking of Maryellen a lot. Every time I drive on Prospect Street in Wethersfield she comes to mind. I am saddened by the short time she had to enjoy retirement and family. She and I always talked about the JOY we got from our kids. We were blessed with a friendship of motherly sisterhood and she is dearly missed!

I met Mary Ellen and Patsy in 1977 when I was teaching at St. John's in Brussels.

We were young then, just starting out in life, and she was pregnant with their first child.

We all came home to the US at the end of that year, bought homes, had our kids, and then drifted apart.

But, I'll never forget Mary Ellen, her laugh, her face filled with expression...she filled a room.

I just found out yesterday that she has passed on and I am sorry for that....sorry for her children, for Patsy, and for all who knew her. She was a good person, with a good heart.

Ms. Noonan is truly a happy memory for our whole family. She was the 5th grade teacher for all 3 of us siblings at JWMS and she touched each of our lives. We particularly remember her joyous laugh. She was the kind of teacher whose kindness stands out after all these years. We are genuinely saddened to hear this news and wish her family comfort and strength.

My deepest condolences to the family. I remember her so well. She was my 4th grade teacher, it was her first year teaching. She had such an impact on me, always so positive, encouraging and kind. She knew how to bring out the best in her students. Rest in peace, Miss Noonan.

I am so sorry to hear of Ms. Noonan's passing. I attended your (Patsy) and her wedding with my fellow classmates way back when. How exciting that was to be invited to your teacher's wedding. She had to be called Mrs. DeFrancesco for the rest of the school year because she was ahead of her time by keeping her maiden name and the school didn't know how to handle that. LOL By the next year, she was Ms. Noonan.

She was always one of my favorite teachers. I was totally ADHD before it became a well-known thing but she was always patient and seemed to enjoy my high energy!! It was one of the first years that I felt a teacher genuinely liked me. It turned me around so that I went on to be quite successful in school. I am sure you will hear many similar stories as this.

I was glad to catch up again with her via Facebook and had no idea she was battling a health issue. She loved her family immensely... that was always clear! I will keep you all in my prayers.

Deepest Sympathies,
Jennifer (De Nuccio) Arel

I am so very sad to learn of Maryellen's passing. Although she is in the comfort of God's care, she certainly made this world a better place. I have so many wonderful memories of our times together teaching teachers to be mentors to other teachers. Maryellen always made learning fun and had so many wonderful stories to share. You could tell in an instant that her students were lucky to have her. Not only was she caring and compassionate, but she understood her craft and the needs of her students, whether children or adults. She always advocated for what was right. One thing that was obvious was her love for her family. So many wonderful stories of time in Wellfleet and New York. Her laughter and glowing smile overflowed with pride whenever she spoke about one of her kids or her husband.
Marissa, my heart especially aches for you. I know how close you were and how much your mom adored you and your beautiful daughter. May your mom's glorious smile, infectious laughter, and many, many wonderful memories help you through this difficult time. You and your family continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

So sad to read of "Miss Noonan's" passing. I was a student of hers during her first year (I think) teaching 4th grade at Elm Hill School in Newington. I have some very fond memories of that year and think of her as one of my favorite teachers.

Later in life, serendipity would have our paths cross again when I was dispatched to her home for an HVAC service call. Not only did she remember me as soon as mentioned my name, by the time I'd completed my tasks she had located a photo album full of pictures from that year. We had quite the pleasant time reminiscing.

MaryEllen was a very special person. To her husband, children and entire family I am truly sorry for your loss and will keep you in my prayers.

My heart is sad today after finding out of Ms. Noonans passing. She was a wonderful and amazing teacher. Coming from NY to CT as a new student, She welcomed me into her classroom. It was a tiny room on the 5th grade wing, it was cozy, warm, and welcoming whenever I arrived to her classroom. She thought me so much over the years and she was the person who made me realize that reading wasn't so hard. My love for reading would have never happened if it weren't for her. I have many memories of all the wonderful things she did in order to make me love reading and feel safe and happy at school. One of my favorite things was she loved helping out and we were all part of a group that helped donate money for families to have animals in a farm. Even after middle school I visited her a couple of times. I wish I would have seen her again but I will always cherish all the memories and lessons she gave me. She will always be my favorite teacher and she will never be forgotten. Thank you Ms. Noonan! Condolences to the family!

Was so shocked and saddened to read of Maryellen's passing this morning. There was a group of four of us in grammar school who were the best of friends. We were all in the same class and played in the fife and drum corps together. Spent many weekends with the girls at Maryellen's home in Wethersfield during 8th grade. There are memories I will never forget and I think of her and them every time I drive by the house she grew up in. Rest in peace, my friend. We'll all be together again one day.
