Matthew KEEFE Obituary

KEEFE, Matthew Neyland Age 20 of Brentwood, TN and Ft. Mitchell, KY. Died suddenly Monday, October 8th at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR, where he was a Junior studying Fermentation Science. He attended Ensworth H.S. prior to moving to Cincinnati where he graduated from Summit Country Day School in 2010 as a Merit Finalist. At OSU he was on the Dean's List and a beloved member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. Matthew's interest in yeast and bread baking as a young child transferred to a passion for beer brewing with the ambition of being the next Sam Adams, receiving a Brewing Network scholarship and medaling at the age of 16 in the national home brew competition. In his short life he accomplished and saw many things. He traveled throughout the U.S. and to over 20 countries, recently returning from a study abroad in Italy. He was knowledgeable about just about any topic but was especially passionate about economics and politics. He was the 4th District Representative for the state of KY for his beloved Libertarian Party beginning at the age of 17 and was a representative at the national convention in 2012. His convictions made him a frequent interviewee on TV. More than anything, Matthew will be remembered for his incredible sense of humor; whether as an Elvis impersonator, or the constant flow of both good and bad puns that would spew from him, he would always have the whole room laughing. He had an amazing capacity for love and a heart of gold. He was an avid Reds and Titans fan. Matthew was preceded in death by his father Edward Keefe and his grandparents Bob and Diddy Wood. He is survived by his mother Stephanie Wood Keefe Schmitter, step-father Jeffrey Schmitter, step-brothers Karl and Ben, grandmother Peggy Keefe, grandfather Bud Keefe, uncle Robert Wood, aunts Glenna (Steve) Riggleman and Karen Keefe, and many cousins. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Edward's Catholic Church at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2012 with Rev. Joseph Pat Breen officiating. A Rosary will be at 2:15 p.m. and visitation at 2:30 p.m. A second Memorial Service will be held in Cincinnati during winter break. The family requests contributions be made to The Matthew Keefe Memorial Fund; Attn: D. Figlio; 1st Advantage Bank; 3100 West End Ave., Ste. 250; Nashville, TN 37203 to assist with the establishment of scholarships dedicated to Matthew and his love of learning.

Steph: Alaina, Logan and I will not be able to be there Sunday. Please know that we are praying for you through this. We loved Matthew as our own and frequently tell "Matthew stories". Anyone he encountered that didn't have a ready smile, became a challenge for Matthew. He knew he could use his quick wit to bring it out of anyone. I will always miss him, just as I still miss Edd. Please know how much we love you. I can't even find the words to tell you.

To Matthew's family and friends: As a parent of another OSU student, I wish to tell you all how sorry I am that this has happened. My heart breaks for you. My son was one of many fraternity brothers that stopped eveything and went over to help in any way they could, all of them feeling the shock and sadness. There are no words and all I wanted to do is reach out and tell you that there is a community right here that is grieving the loss of your son. Blessings to all of you, be kind to yourselves as you make your way on this unknown journey.
