While a Claims Manager with Mutual Savings Life I worked with Max on a continuous basis for almost five years. He was the smartest, toughest, most creative defense lawyer I ever had the honor to work with, with an extraordinary professional integrity. I loved the way he would read a newspaper while an attorney took my deposition, thoroughly flomaxing the other attorney. I grieve his passing.

Julia,
Always good to see you but not under the circumstances of last Monday. Max meant the world to me from the day he pledged me to Delta Tau Delta in September 1957 on. I have been blessed to know many fine men well. None are finer though than Max. Please keep in touch and get Max,Jr. and/or Lee to bring you to the Delt House every year at Homecoming.
Love,
John Owens

Mr. Pope was a true Southern gentleman. I appeared before him while he was Trustee during my first week as an attorney. I was filling in for my senior partner, and scared to death. Mr. Pope came in ploped his hat on the desk and started shuffling papers. I approached and introduced myself. He didn't look up from his papers at first, but when I mentioned that I was a brand new attorney, he stopped looked up at me and smiled. He could not have been more gracious during that hearing, and I will never forget that.

My deepest sympathy for your great loss. I never had the pleasure of meeting your husband, Max. I know you probably won't remember me but you have helped me multiple times when I entered the watercolor of Alabama shows at the public library in Birmingham. Just wanted to tell ou that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
