Maxine Hudson Obituary

HUDSON, Maxine Feb 12, 1937 - Apr 26, 2018 Maxine Hudson was a fun person. And was beautiful both inside and out. She was special. Loving wife to Ray, her husband of 60 years, their marriage produced a daughter, Kim, a son, Greg, and two granddaughters, Olivia and Camille, who all will miss her enormously. Maxine relished her many friendships, each of whom felt they had a unique position in Maxine's heart, because they did. She made all her friends feel special and like each was her best friend. She was an exceptional cook and relished the delight it gave to her guests. She was always the perfect host because she made her guests feel at home. She portrayed a traditional elegance that was never stuffy or pretentious but, rather, natural and reassuring. Maxine had an amazing capacity to see things as they are....but she chose to focus on the positive in people and view the world with hope and optimism. She appreciated humor and could see the silliness in everyday situations and laughed easily - sometimes at herself but never at the expense of someone else. While often easy-going, she could be tenacious and had a strong determination to support and fight for what mattered most to her. And she covered those things with a palpable sweetness that others could see and taste. She grasped the personal nature of hardship and her compassion was often active, as when she taught high school in a special education program for pregnant girls. Maxine's faith was deep but private. And her character reflected that depth that was rooted, secure and resilient. Her love of all Texas Longhorn sports also ran deep and she exhibited it openly. We know she's already leading a happy "Hook 'em Horns!" Cheer in Heaven. Not simply a sports fan, she was an accomplished tennis player and excelled at all levels for many years. And she acquired and developed deep friendships along the way. Maxine seemed to have boundless energy...until it was time to go to bed. She was definitely not a night owl but would always be the first person up in the morning, making the coffee, reading the newspaper and greeting the day with gratitude and joyful anticipation. And joy was reflected through her gifts as an artist, whose water color portraits had an uncanny ability to capture the inner character and soul of her subjects, whether person or animal. She loved to travel and, with Ray, Greg, Kim and their families, covered the globe. Every place she visited always seemed to be her favorite. Her infectious passion made everyone's trip better and more memorable. Maxine was born in Austin, moved to West Texas, where she was a wife, mother and school teacher and friend to many. Upon retirement, she moved back to her beloved Austin, which had sparked her imagination since her days at UT, where she was a sorority member at Zeta Tau Alpha. A memorial service and celebration of Maxine will be held on Saturday, May 5th at Tarrytown United Methodist Church in Austin at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to Maxine's favorite institutions: Tarrytown United Methodist Church; UT College of Natural Sciences; Dell Children's Medical Center; or the charity of your choice. Ray,
Katharine and I learned with great sadness the passing of your beloved Maxine. Please accept our condolences.
We always enjoyed looking to our right on your yearly visits to Alpine's FUMC to see you and Maxine in our presence. And, rest assured...the after church popcorn supply if still available in our car's trunk!
On May 28 the 2018 Alpine Cowboys baseball home season begins. I have no doubt that Maxine will somehow be in attendance with a crown upon her head, sitting on a padded wooden chair, watching the game on a virtual live 300" flat screen HD TV. Plus, she'll have a bag of good buttered popcorn.
Blessings to you and all of Maxine's family and loved ones.

When I moved to Austin a few years ago I was very fortunate to reconnect with my old friend Greg, but better yet, I had the opportunity to get to know Maxine, an amazingly kind, generous, beautiful woman who made me feel like I had never left Texas. My son Henry and I both felt like we quickly became friends with her. She made things easy that way. We were so sorry we could not be there, but I'm sure many, many people did come to celebrate her. She deserved it.

My compliments to the members of this special, distinguished family, who wrote Maxine's obit. It is very accurate in describing her lovingkindness, charm, abilities, and astonishing energy. I first met her when she and Ray came to Houston, probably to watch a game vs Rice. (We were college kids then. That was maybe 1956.) Because we were such close friends for so long, I weep for her loss. But I have resolved to stop grieving, and rejoice in the knowledge of her sturdy faith in our Lord Jesus and what He did for us. Because of Maxine's trust in Him, she is now face-to-face with Him. And He promises us that no one (not even the Adversary) can pluck Maxine out of His hand. Now THAT is the Good News that overcomes and lightens up the darkest day.
Amen.

We only knew Maxine a short time as a neighbor and fell in love with her instantly. She became a role model of a gracious, welcoming, warm neighbor and generous hostess. She had a sparkle that was always evident. We feel so lucky to have known her. Ray, you and your family are in our hearts and prayers many times a day. Every time we see your home, we think of you and Maxine with the tenderest fondest.

There are two kinds of people in the world: Givers and Takers and Maxine was definitely the giver. She gave to her family love, compassion, wonderful healthy food and opened the world to them. She was so talented and positive in every task she undertook. Maxine had an infectious smile and was a beautiful woman with a giant heart for helping others. God has blessed the Warren family because Maxine passed our way! We will miss you Max. Love to your beautiful family. Patt and Earl Warren, San Angelo, TX
