Nabil Fahmy Obituary

Dr. Nabil G. Fahmy

MANSFIELD: Dr. Nabil G. Fahmy, son of Gabra Fahmy and Anissa Haj, died at Liberty nursing home on Friday, December 13, 2013 following a long illness. Nabil was born in Port Said, Egypt on January 2, 1929. He graduated from the University of Cairo Medical School at the age of 22 and completed a general surgery residency. He did volunteer work in The Sudan and also worked at the U.S. Naval Research Center in Cairo.

Nabil married Yvette Massad on February 15, 1957. They came to Ontario, Canada where Nabil completed an internship. Their first son Anthony was born shortly after their arrival to North America. The young family came to the United States and Nabil joined the Army. Their second son Fred was born shortly thereafter. Nabil served two years in France commanding the 16th field hospital and one year as Chief of Clinical Services at Fort Jay Hospital on Governor's Island, New York.

After discharge from the Army, Nabil completed his residency in Anesthesiology in Youngstown, Ohio. Their third son Andrew was born there.

The Fahmy family then moved to Mansfield where Nabil joined Anesthesia Associates. He practiced from 1965 until his retirement in 1991. Nabil and Yvette spent many winters in Florida because, as he used to say, "you can take the boy out of the ocean but you can't take the ocean out of they boy". Nabil loved the sea and his boat. He was also passionate about golf, swimming, and hunting. Mostly though, he was passionate about his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Yvette, sons Dr. Anthony (Dr. Julie Tome) Fahmy, Fred Fahmy, Dr. Andrew (Lynn) Fahmy, as well as sisters Ammal Jammal, Nadia Fahmy, Pauline Fahmy and brother Anthony (Kathy) Fahmy. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jackie, Monique, Matthew, and Andy whom he cherished as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a great man who believed in honesty, hard work, and faith. He lived a rich and interesting life and often said he had no regrets. He was dearly loved by his family.

Family and friends are invited to call Monday, December 16, 2013 from 5-7p.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Rd., Mansfield. Funeral services, conducted by Father Jeremy Miller, will be held Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 10:00am.m at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 104 West First Street, Mansfield. Burial will follow in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of the donor's choice.

Mrs. Fahmy, Tony, Fred, and Andrew:

My heartfelt condolences on the death of Dr. Fahmy. He was a wonderful man and leaves a rich and enduring legacy through his family and his many professional accomplishments. He made his community a better place, and I am very thankful that I was able to know him when I was growing up in Mansfield.

Yvette,

To night I was looking through newspapers from the last two weeks. I saw Nabil's obituary. Memories of times past flooded my thinking.

Many years ago as young parents we all came to Mansfield with our little children. I remember Nabil as the one to make jokes and to keep us all in stitches. We shared food, dancing, visits from Nabil's mother and brothers. You were patient with my broken Arabic. Warm memories keep us united.

My heart embraces you as you and your sons navigate the loss of Nabil. His love goes on in the hearts of each of you, the smiles in the grandchildren and in memories of all who know the Fahmys. Know that you are love.

Yvette, Tony, Fred & Andy,

It was with profound sadness that i learned of your Father's recent passing.

As a teenageer, whenever i visited your home on Briarwood in Mansfield i was always pleased anytime your Father simply remembered my name. It was an honor just being in the presence of someone so brilliant as he.

I have many vivid mental snapshots of your Father strolling the fairways at Westbrook -- often in the worst of weather, canvas walking bag over his shoulder, always playing solo and seemingly quite content with the solitude of it all.

I remember Andy telling me many times how, as a youth growing up in Egypt, Nabil used to literally swim on the backs of dolphins in the ocean, which was fascinating to me. I'd like to think he swims with dolphins now.

In the nearly 30 years since my family moved from Mansfield, hardly a week goes past that i don't think at least briefly of Nabil and Yvette.

To my very good friend Andy, and Yvette in particular, i wish you nothing but strength during this time of grief.

Nabil was a compassionate and gentle soul ... and a truly wonderful man.

God bless you all.

Condolences from the Seibert family on the loss of your father. My father Dr. Joseph Seibert was very fond of your dad and they worked together for many years at Mansfield General. A long time ago in the 70's they fished together on Sanibel and your father taught my dad how to spice things with Cumin! He always referred to it as Dr. Fahmy's dish! Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
