JOFFE, Norman Dr. Norman Joffe, Distinguished Radiologist, 94 Dr. Norman Joffe, a distinguished diagnostic radiologist at Beth Israel Hospital for 42 years and a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 14 in Boston. He was 94 years old. Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Jewish Lithuanian immigrants, Norman's life was one of quiet dedication to others, intellectual brilliance, and profound love for his family. He earned his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand before completing a radiology residency at Guy's Hospital in London. It was in South Africa where he met Monica, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 65 years of marriage. The couple settled in Brookline in 1966, where they raised their three children. For 42 years, Dr. Joffe was a pillar of the radiology department at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, a leading teaching center of Harvard Medical School. Though he shied away from the spotlight, his colleagues and resident trainees held him in the highest regard. His keen diagnostic eye and deep medical knowledge was invaluable to the department. His influential research, detailed in over 40 published papers, brought new clarity to the understanding of Crohn's colitis, pancreatic cancer, and appendicitis. His character is perhaps best encapsulated by the Norman Joffe Award, an honor still given annually at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to the staff member "who often but discreetly goes above and beyond for the residents." Norman was a voracious reader, a lover of classical music and theater, and an avid world traveler. He possessed a famously dry, witty sense of humor that was a treasured delight for those who knew him well. He was a constant, steady presence, offering wisdom and unwavering support to his children and adoring ten grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife, Monica; his daughter, Vivienne; his sons Gavin and Paul and their wives; and his ten grandchildren. His memory will be an enduring blessing to all who knew him.
